Well the day came when CFL teams had to make some cut downs. The “Who’s in, who’s out” date. For Bomber fans I do not see too much to take note of on the cut downs. If anyone stands out on the list, I have to agree with Ed Tait that it is Myron Mitchell. As he stated, the Bombers look deep at receiver and they had to pass on someone.
Released from roster:
American receiver Keilahn Harris
National receiver Nic Kwemo
National receiver AK Gassama
American receiver Bryson Daughtry
American receiver Reggie Brown
American receiver David Wallis
American receiver Myron Mitchell
American receiver Jaylen Hall
American defensive lineman Devo Bridges
National receiver Nick Adair
American offensive lineman Aidan Hemphill
American offensive lineman Christophe Atkinson
National offensive lineman Alexis Levesque-Gallant
American defensive back Dexter Lawson Jr.
American defensive lineman Kevin Pointer
American defensive lineman Marquise Lawson-Greenwood
American defensive lineman Phillip Webb
American defensive lineman Brandon Wright
American defensive back Isaiah Avery
American defensive back Russell Dandy
American defensive back Tay Gowan
American defensive back Latavious Brini
National long snapper Ian Leroux
Global punter James Evans
Is there anything that jumps off the page for you with that list?
However, what I find more interesting is who they moved to the practice roster.
Added to practice roster:
American running back Quinton Cooley
American receiver Reggie White Jr.
National receiver Gavin Cobb
American receiver Kody Case
American defensive back Cam Allen
American defensive back Jaiden Woodbey
American defensive lineman Jay Person
American offensive lineman Tyler Elsbury
National offensive lineman Ethan Vibert
National defensive back Ethan Ball
Global defensive lineman Kemari Munier-Bailey
The most notable one for me was Quinton Cooley. I thought he had a great preseason. In his first game he rushed five times for 36 yards, which is a 7.2 average and a large of 14 yards. That was better than Brady Oliveira who rushed only twice for 11 yards, one of those for no gain. Now to be fair, the more touches Brady gets the move those numbers grow as he usually produces better than that. Colley also had two catches on three targets for for 36 yards and a large of 25.
In his second game, Cooley was used more as a featured back and had eight carries for 56 yards and a large of 14. His average yardage per carry was seven yards…nothing to scoff at. Yet with all that, he was still unable to crack the full roster and is currently on the practice roster.
Here is the other notable addition for me; National defensive back Ethan Ball. Why? Not because of his play, but because who he is related to, Michael Ball (a.k.a. Ballsy). Known best for his controversial, argumentative, and abrasive personality, “Ballsy” was known latest for his role as the radio play by play announcer for the Saskatchewan Rough Riders. He was equally know for his social media posts often taking shots at the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Now before you jump on me, let me make one thing absolutely clear. I am not saying that the Bombers should not sign Ethan Ball. If he can play, that is all that really matters. Why I find this interesting is I want to see what happens with Michael Ball online. Is he going to stop criticizing the Bombers as long as his son is on the practice/active roster? I would assume so. But is it possible that he is actually still critical of the Bombers depending on how they treat his son? Now that would be wildly entertaining.
So while nothing jumps off the page at me in terms of cuts (those surprising ones already happened with the cuts of Dolegala and Patterson – both quarterbacks.
