The Saskatchewan Roughriders started strong, asserting themselves as early contenders with solid offensive displays and a tough defence. The Montreal Alouettes have also shown consistent execution and leadership from emerging quarterback Davis Alexander.

The reigning champions, the Toronto Argonauts, have had a rough start to the season, facing some early challenges. Their first game saw them go up against the Montreal Alouettes and come out with a loss of 28-10. Of course, it’s still very early in the season, and CFL fans will know that anything can happen. It’s still very possible for any team to make the final at this point.

Emerging trends and rising stars

While it’s still early on in the season, there have been a number of emerging trends and standout performers. One of the more notable trends is the need for quarterback versatility. As teams are seeking dual-threat quarterbacks capable of both passing and rushing effectively. This is evident from the performances of players like Chase Brice of the BC Lions, who showcased impressive efficiency in the preseason, completing 8 of 10 passes for 104 yards and a touchdown.

Another significant trend is the rise of young talent making an immediate impact. Players like:

  • Damien Alford (WR, Calgary Stampeders): The No.1 overall pick with a 4.46s 40-yard dash. Alford weighs in at 224-lb. Though he wasn’t a college volume receiver, Calgary are expecting him to be a vertical threat.
  • Connor Shay (LB, Winnipeg Blue Bombers): Selected sixth overall, Shay posted a 4.52s 40yd dash. His speed, aggression and instincts have experts comparing him to Alex Singleton. Shay is expected to contribute on special teams and defence.
  • Keelan White (WR, Ottawa Redblacks): Ottawa’s third overall pick with a 4.60s 40yd dash. White is a polished route-runner with strong hands, while he might not be known for his speed, he has an incredible catch ability. This could see him secure a starting role soon.
  • Tiger Shanks (OL Montreal Allouttes): A powerful left tackle from UNLV. Shanks earned back-to-back All-Mountain West selections and just 11 pressures in 410 pass-blocking snaps. Montreal are expecting him to anchor the offensive line early on.
  • Devin Versuk (LB, Hamilton Tiger-Cats): Pick second overall by Hamilton with a 4.47s 40yd dash. His U Sports resume boasts 199 tackles, 11 sacks and multiple turnovers, which signals a high-impact defender that’s ready to make plays.
  • Hayden Harris (DL, BC Lions): Chosen 11th overall, Harris brings edge-rushing prowess and strength. His skill set complements BC’s front and offers a strong rotational option.
  • Taylor Elgersma (QB, Winnipeg Blue Bombers): Winnipeg’s 18th pick is a polished Laurier QB with a strong arm, exceptional accuracy (70.7%) and top-tier draft buzz.
  • Ethan Jordan (WR, Ottawa Redblacks): A late-round gem. Jordan amassed 243 tackles and 27 touchdowns at Laurier before blazing a 4.44s 40yd dash at the CFL combine.

These rookies are among the brightest new talents in the CFL. So keep an eye on them as they aim to make an immediate impact on their teams.

The 2025 CFL season is off to an incredible start. Week 1 has already offered thrilling matchups, surprising results and breakout performances that promise an unforgettable year ahead. While it’s still very early on in the season, one thing is certain: the 2025 CFL is setting up to be a competitive and exciting year.
