CFL, CFLPA Reach Tentative Deal On A New 7-Year CBA, Strike Is Over

The gloom and doom that some have been pushing is over. The CFL and CFLPA have come to a new seven-year CBA. The agreement ended the second strike in CFL history, which lasted just four days. The previous CFL strike was in 1974 and settled before the season started. Late last night, the CFL put out the following tweet.

“The CFL and the CFLPA have reached a tentative agreement, subject to ratification.”

The agreement must still be ratified by both the CFL board of governors and the CFL Players’ Association, but teams are expected to report today for walkthroughs and start pre-season training.

In a memo to the CFLPA it said:

“We will inform the league that we have approved a Memorandum of Agreement and that we have ended our strike. We believe the clubs will want to start training camp soon, and players should expect to hear from them.”

According to TSN’s Farhan Lalji, the deal is good for the players and the CFL.

According to a report by Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun, Blue Bombers player rep Adam Bighill said.

“But I’m confident we knocked it out of the park, here. The best that we could do. We can see how much the deal changed in the matter of one day… we did what we needed to do for the players and were able to get it done.”

CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie and owners got significant heat from some players and the usual band of FUD CFL reporters. Do you think this is a fair deal for the CFL players?

The CFL 2022 regular season kicks-off June 9th with the Montreal Alouettes taking on the Calgary Stampeders. No word yet on if the four day strike will effect the pre season. TSN’s Dave Naylor is reporting that games could be changed.

It’s great news. The salary cap remains too low and fans want to see star players in the CFL. There should be a marquee player exemption clause attached to the salary cap. Then maybe they’ll reinstate Johnny Manziel and bring in Baker Mayfield after he gets dumped by the Browns. A marquee player exemption would have allowed a CFL team to sign Metchie III. There needs to be quality player attraction to fill the seats of the CFL.
