CFL Imposes Fines on Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, and Winnipeg for Surpassing 2022 Salary Cap

After completing their yearly audit, the Canadian Football League (CFL) has announced penalties against the Montreal Alouettes, Ottawa REDBLACKS, Toronto Argonauts, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers for going over the 2022 Salary Expenditure Cap.

None of the teams surpassed the Salary Expenditure Cap by over $100,000, so the 2023 CFL Draft order scheduled for May 2 remains unchanged.

The review procedure for the Salary Management System entails a comprehensive field audit for all nine clubs following the season. In addition, teams must submit periodic updates on compensation levels at the six-, 12-, and 18-game marks during the season.

The Salary Expenditure Cap for the upcoming 2023 season has been set at $5.45M.

The CFL salary cap is too low, and the fact that the two teams which made it to the Grey Cup last year both broke the salary cap sends the message that if you would like to be a top contender in the CFL, then don’t place priority on the salary cap.
