CFL Week 3: Edmonton Elks Vs. Montreal Alouettes Game Preview

Well, fans in Edmonton are feeling very down spiritually after last night’s game 6 loss to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Finals.  The possibility of the Edmonton Oilers forcing a game 7 and heading back home came to an abrupt end. It was deja vu from last season seeing the Florida Panthers hoist Lord Stanley’s mug above their heads.  It was a great season for the Edmonton Oilers.  However, this one hurts for the Edmonton faithful.  Hopefully, getting back to the big dance for 3 years in a row next season and completing the chapter would be a great story for the ages.

Now, let’s focus on football.

The Edmonton Elks are coming off a bye in week 2 and will now host the Montreal Alouettes at Commonwealth Stadium.

Injury Report:  Montreal Alouettes

The Montreal Alouettes fall victim to the injury bug. DB Dionte Ruffin (Hamstring) is listed as out, DL Josua Archibald (Hamstring) is listed as out, OL Nick Callender (Foot) is listed as out, OL Cyrille Hogan-Saindon (Knee) is listed as out, QB James Morgan (Back) is listed as out, and DB Travis Theis (Neck) is listed as out.

Players to Watch:  Edmonton Elks

Nick Anderson:  Since Edmonton is entering week 3 from a bye in week 2, we will focus on their defence, as the offensive production statistically was nothing to be proud of after their week 1 loss to B.C.

On that note, it will be up t

o the defence to slow down the powerful offence of the Montreal Alouettes.  Nick Anderson will be a key player in changing the momentum of the game.  He has been a proven player on the Elks’ defence.  He had been a rock for the Elks in his rookie season last year with 111 tackles, 3 sacks, and 1 interception.

Nyles Morgan:  There are only positives to say about Nyles Morgan.  He has been one of the core players for the Elks since the 2023 season.  Since arriving in 2021, his work ethic has paid dividends. He was rewarded for his contributions and has been pencilled into the depth chart as a starter.  He has back-to-back triple-digit tackles in 2023 (107), followed by 2024 (111).

Players to Watch:  Montreal Alouettes

Austin Mack:

strong>He has been an explosive player for the Alouettes since entering the CFL in 2023.  He has been a franchise player who has elevated his game at a quick rate.  He can be a game-changer when it comes to big moments.  He has the speed and agility to shake off anyone in a defensive secondary to create the space needed for a quarterback to deliver the ball.  Austin Maxk has not seen the end zone so far this season.  However, in 2 games played, with 154 receiving yards and 10 receptions, his 15.4 average yards per catch will be something Edmonton will have to figure out to lower that statistic.

Tyler Snead:  Montreal found a gem in 2023 when they signed Tyler Snead as an undrafted free agent.  For a rookie, he played above expectations with 56 receptions, 788 receiving yards, and 5 touchdowns.  An injury-plagued season for Tyler Snead was a setback, with only 7 games played in 2024.  Many Alouette fans love Tyler Snead as his game is similar to one of the best Alouettes of all time, Ben Cahoon.

Keys to an Edmonton Victory

The offensive line wi

ll need to be as solid as possible.

It won’t be easy, as Montreal creates the most pressure among all CFL teams.  The Elks need to find or create ways to halt the pressure from the snap of the ball when the Alouettes attack.

Do not be a one-dimensional offence.

If the Elks can stretch the b

all both with the run and the passing game, there is the possibility that they can give Montreal a different look.  Tre Ford has to be creative in the pocket when distributing the ball to different receivers to make this game unpredictable for the Montreal defence.

Try to eliminate turnovers.

It is easier said than done.  If the Elks encounter a turnover problem, they are all but done in this game tomorrow night.  They have playmakers on the defence who can change the tone of the game.  If this does become the case, it is a recipe for a possible upset.

Prediction

p>

There are a lot of intangibles that will have to go Edmonton’s way in this game.  Hopefully, the coaching staff has an extended playbook to offset a different look that might be able to exploit Montreal.  On that note, Edmonton has to be the aggressor here and dictate the flow of the game.

Final Score

Montreal Alouettes:  31<

/p>

Edmonton Elks:  23

The Montreal Alouettes prove they are who we thought they were, and leave Edmonton with a 3-0 record.  Edmonton puts up a fight.  But the overall factor, along with Montreal being a more polished product, will be too much for the Elks to overcome.
