Clarity? Sort Of…Bomber’ Head Coach Mike O’Shea Signs 3 Year Extension

Here is what we do know; the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will have Mike O’Shea back as their head coach for the next 3 years. After that piece of information, things get a little less clear.

While Mike O’Shea, generally holds his cards close to his vest, it seemed like he was doing so just a little bit more in his interview. When asked about why he would explore what Toronto had to offer, he talked about the duty, or obligation to self, to do his due diligence. O’Shea said, “I don’t go on expiring contracts to look around.” When asked why he waits for an expiring contract to extend it, he told the reporters, this is the way we do things.

When Friesen pressed O’Shea more, trying to find out the why, someone from the Bombers organization urged the reporter to move on. At that point, O’Shea spoke up and said that he always bets on himself. When asked about any interest in being a general manager, O’Shea said, “I am always interested in growth, but I am not interested in power.” This one really struck me, as previously it was mentioned that the Bombers run a really tight show with many rules around what reporters can and cannot do. In fact, around the 54 minute mark, Farhan called the Bombers a “house of cards,” that always seems to keep getting the band back together.

When asked in his media availability (which will be posted below) if he knows if any of the coordinators will be back (reading between the lines, they were asking about Jason Hogan the Bombers’ offensive coordinator) O’Shea shut that conversation down very quickly. In fact, the whole interview ended abruptly.

So while we know that O’Shea will be back for the next three years; this media availability was anything bu celebratory and normal.
