Dane Evans Likely to Test CFL Free Agent Market

With the CFL offseason now underway, there will likely be some player movement in the coming weeks and months. One name to look out for is Tiger-Cats quarterback Dane Evans, who should be getting a lot of interest.

Evans originally played for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, and was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2017. After being cut before the regular season, Evans went up North to Canada, and has been with Hamilton ever since.

The Tiger-Cats’ quarterback job was anything but clear in 2021, with the team using three different signal-callers. Jeremiah Masoli was the original no. 1, but Evans looked arguably better when on the field. The two went back-and-forth, mostly due to injuries. David Watford also saw playing time when both men were unavailable.

In recent years, Hamilton had the luxury of two starting-caliber quarterbacks on their roster, something that most CFL teams didn’t have. However, that era is likely over, as Masoli is also a free agent heading into 2022. With only one quarterback set to return, the lingering question is who should it be?

Masoli is an aging veteran, and has been with the Tiger-Cats since 2013. While Evans is younger, he has slightly less experience. Both have expressed their love and loyalty to Hamilton, with Evans saying that he wants to be with the team. He also said that since he’s never been in free agency before, he owes it to himself to discover possible opportunities. In other words, Evans is open to offers from other teams, but would definitely consider a return depending on how the situation plays out.

Evans had a stellar campaign in 2019, and has shown similar promise ever since. There’s no doubt that he can be a starter for years to come, and the team that ends up signing him is getting a great player.

David Watford is the sleeper, given a chance he could be better than Masoli and Evans
