Former Ti-Cats QB Jalen Morton Goes South, Joins Birmingham Stallions of the USFL

It seems Jalen Morton is getting another shot, this time returning to the United States to take part of the USFL. The 25-year old returns to America after spending the past two season in Ontario, by signing with the Birmingham Stallions.

Morton joins a QB room that has two former CFL quarterbacks, J’Mar Smith a former Ti-Cat, and Montell Cozart who spent three seasons with the Calgary Stampeders along with Alex McGough an NFL vet of three teams from 2018-2021.

Morton has been a bit of a journeyman between the NFL and CFL before his USFL signing. Originally an undrafted free agent out of Prairie View A&M, Morton spent 2020 and 2021 splitting time with the Packers and Colts before going up North signing a contract with Hamilton in September of 2021. Morton spent the rest of the 2021 season bouncing back and forth on the Ti-Cats practice squad before being resigned in January of 2022.

Morton would garner an opportunity in 2022 due to an injury to starter Dane Evans and an ineffective Jamie Newman. Morton appeared in four games in 2022 going 2/6 for 13 yards and 1 interception with 14 yards on the ground. Morton would be released after the Ti-Cats were eliminated from the playoffs on November 7th.

For Morton his career in the USFL may come down to a battle for the QB3 spot against Montel Cozart. With J’Mar Smith clearly the guy of 2023, and Alex McGough solidified as QB2, Cozart and Morton look to go head-to-head for the final spot in the Stallions QB room. Regardless Morton has an opportunity to extend his pro-football career in the USFL and with his recent stint in the CFL, Morton does have more recent experience than Cozart which could be the inside track into winning the QB3 job.
