The last time the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (9-6) played the Toronto Argonauts (5-10), Toronto won 35-33 on a final field goal at the Labour Day Classic. That ending further fueled “The Battle of the QEW” rivalry. Since then, both teams have met their share of challenges.

The Tiger-Cats are in 1st place in the East Division despite losing their last two games, including a 40-3 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers last week. However, before facing Winnipeg, they had already clinched a playoff berth when the Argonauts lost to the BC Lions 27-22 in Week 17. Therefore, while this week may not be a do-or-die game for Hamilton, a win over Toronto at BMO Field would not only maintain their momentum but also put them within reach of clinching the East Division title and improving their playoff seeding.

In contrast to the Tiger-Cats, the Toronto Argonauts have struggled to build any momentum since upsetting Hamilton. As Hamilton aims to secure the division title and a favorable playoff position, Toronto is fighting to keep its postseason hopes alive, a feat that is especially notable given its two Grey Cup wins in the last three seasons. For Toronto, defeating Hamilton is not only significant, but this time it could also have direct playoff implications, potentially hampering Hamilton’s progress and making it a pivotal game for the Argonauts’ fading ambitions.

With both teams heading into this week, the stakes are high: the winner between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the Toronto Argonauts will secure a stronger position in the playoff standings, while the loser risks losing control over their post-season destiny.

According to the Week 18 CFL Injury Report, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are getting healthy as they prepare to make a post-season run, and Toronto is in better shape than they were the last several weeks. For the Tiger-Cats, only two players have been ruled OUT for this game: wide receiver Keaton Bruggeling (Load Management) and fullback Daniel Bell (Elbow). The Argonauts, however, have five players ruled OUT for this week: running back Miyan Williams (Head), offensive linemen Dylan Giffen (Back) and Brandon Kemp (Adductor), defensive lineman Anthony Lanier (Ankle), and defensive back Miyan Williams (Head). In addition, Argonauts wide receiver Dave Ungerer (Knee) is ruled questionable.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats Depth Chart

Toronto Argonauts Depth Chart

Key to Victory #1: Pressure Argonauts QB Nick Arbuckle

Defensively, it is important for the Tiger-Cats’ defensive front seven to put pressure on Argonauts quarterback Nick Arbuckle. Over the course of the season, Arbuckle has demonstrated his ability to dissect defensive coverages in the CFL. However, Arbuckle has had to find success despite not having the support of an effective run game. While the Argonauts’ offensive line is solid in terms of pass protection, they have failed to consistently win on the line of scrimmage. This lack of balance will allow the Tiger-Cats to play more aggressively and Arbuckle to make plays while evading an aggressive pass rush.

Key to Victory #2: Prevent Toronto’s Explosive Plays

Along with pressuring Arbuckle, the Tiger-Cats’ defensive secondary needs to keep a lid on the Argonauts’ passing game. If Hamilton can force the Argonauts to dink and dunk down the field, it will be a long game for Toronto. Unfortunately, the Tiger-Cats have struggled to contain their opponents’ passing game, but Hamilton needs to step up if they want to develop into a legitimate Grey Cup contender. For Hamilton, there is no time like the present to step up their game and show that they can limit a one-dimensional offensive attack like the Argonauts bring into this game.

Key to Victory #3: Hamilton Must Be Balanced Offensively

When the Hamilton Tiger-Cats have invested time into establishing their running game with Greg Bell, Hamilton has maximized their offensive production. If the Tiger-Cats can get Bell going early they can control the tempo of the game, and they can set up shot plays for wide receivers Kenny Lawler and Kiondre Smith. On the other hand, when the Tiger-Cats have gotten away from their run game they have struggled to protect Bo Levi Mitchell and have found it challenging to get the ball to their best offensive playmakers.

Key to Victory #4: Use Play-Action to Produce Big Plays

The biggest advantage the Tiger-Cats have over the Argonauts this season is their ability to consistently produce explosive plays. However, for Hamilton to exploit their big-play ability, they need to be willing to take some risks and use innovative strategies to force the Argonauts to make mistakes defensively. Hamilton has struggled to make plays consistently on special teams, particularly in kickoff and punt coverage, and needs to improve in these areas. Conversely, the need to produce some big plays in their kick and punt return game to help set the Tiger-Cats up for success offensively.

Key to Victory #5: Force the Argonauts to Turn the Ball Over

The biggest impact the Tiger-Cats can make in this game revolves around their ability to force the Argonauts to turn the ball over. By disrupting the Argonauts’ passing game, they will have a chance to force interceptions. In addition, if Hamilton can force the Argonauts to fumble the ball, they have a chance to put some points on the scoreboard on the defensive side of the ball. Hamilton’s odds for securing a victory increase dramatically when they can score a defensive touchdown.

Game Prediction:

Hamilton Tiger-Cats 31, Toronto Argonauts 29
