In a surprise report at 1 pm today, legendary Canadian Journalist Terry Jones was suddenly let go of his duties by Post Media.
“My last scoop,” Terry Jones tweeted on Wednesday afternoon. “At 1 p.m. today, after beginning my career at The Edmonton Journal in 1967 I received a phone call from Toronto informing me my position had been eliminated by Post Media. Thank you all so much for reading. Hardly the way I hoped it would end. -30-.”
Terry Jones was born in Lacome, Alberta located 128 kilometers south of Edmonton.
He became a sports columnist with the Edmonton Journal in 1967 covering the Edmonton Oilers during their years in the World Hockey Association. He would continue covering the Edmonton Oilers till today with the Edmonton Sun as part of the Post Media family. Furthermore, he was also a staple in writing about the Canadian Football League for decades primarily covering the Edmonton Elks.

In his lengthy sports journalism career, Terry Jones has covered 16 Olympics, which happens to be a Canadian journalism record, over 500 Stanley Cup Playoff Games, over 37 Grey Cup Games, over 20 Super Bowl Games, the Brier Tournament, the Canada Cup, and countless IIHF World Hockey Championships. And his accolades speak for themselves.

Surprising to Hear the News
There is no doubt that the news came as a shock to Terry Jones from the phone call he received from Toronto today. The question is why?
For a journalist who has a vast knowledge in covering multiple sports, why was he released from Post Media? Only time will tell as there has been no news about the reasoning thus far.
As far as Terry Jones continuing his journalism, let’s just say that he would not be looking for work too long as he has been an Edmonton mainstay in the sports scene. There is no doubt that if you are the Edmonton Elks, Edmonton Oilers, and the Edmonton Oil Kings, you can easily add a veteran writer to your staff.

The gag order is obviously out to the Edmonton media, even more widespread that that. Not a word spoken or printed locally here from where I am sitting. Jones had some warts like all of us and at times was perhaps overly critical, and often somewhat self praising. But that’s what a columnist does right? He’s never really been a ‘reporter’ which is different. Post Media ….. bushleague at best. Maybe the FIFA decision saw who was running the newspapers in Edmonton and decided they wanted no part of such a sleezy outfit.
