Pre-Season Week 3 Review: Bombers vs. Riders

For a second time this year we saw the Bombers take on the Riders – a theme we should get used to as they will play each other at least three more times this year. There were a couple of things that I said I would be look at in their second preseason game.

I wanted to see if Winnipeg’s kick return coverage would be any better. In their first meeting, Saskatchewan had 4 kickoff returns for 135 yards or an average of 33.8 yards per return. They also had 5 punt returns for 46 yards, or an average of 9.2 yards per punt return. In their second meeting, Saskatchewan had 6 kickoff returns for 136 yards and an average of 22.7 yards per kickoff return. So the Bombers were significantly better in kickoff return coverage. They were also better in punt return coverage. Saskatchewan returned 7 punts for 57 yards witch averages 8.1 yards per punt return. Slightly better than 9.2 yards per return. I still did not love the return coverage as there were some large holes and Saskatchewan was close to breaking at least one.

Next, I wanted to see if Devin Adams would continue to preform at defensive tackle. While not popping off the page, he did have 1 defensive tackle and 1 quarterback sack. He was one of three Bombers to register a sack. I will like to see more from him before giving him a final grade.

Then, I wanted to see how Quinton Cooley would do. In their first meeting, he had a really good game at running back, as well as receiving. In this game he caught his one ball thrown to him for 9 yards, but was featured in the backfield where he had 8 carries for 56 yards and a large of 14 yards. I think he will be a good addition should the Bombers keep him, as he is currently on the practice roster.

And then what about Chris Streveler? Well, he started the game lights out! He even threw a nice touchdown to Keric Wheatfall – who is going to be a great receiver. However, Streveler’s terrible interception later in the game leave a bit of a question mark. The pass was not even close to a receiver. In fairness, we do not know what play was called or if the receiver ran the wrong route. Yet, I am not convinced that Streveler can be a legitimate number two quarterback that can win multiple games – I hope we do not have to find out, and if we do I hope I am wrong!

One final word. The Bomber’s defense also looked to be in mid-season form!! From putting pressure on the quarterback, to holding the riders only to field goals until late in the game, and creating fumbles; the Bomber’s defense certainly has it going! This is excellent news for a team that has lost some key pieces over the years and a group that has been criticized of getting older. They also held the Riders to only 50 yards, but did allow 302 passing yards.

Find out what the Bombers thought of the game.
