Stampeders QB Mitchell Out Six Games With Broken Fibula

The day after speculation on Bo Levi Mitchell’s status for Friday, the Calgary Stampeders announced he will be out for six games.

Calgary head coach Dave Dickenson said Tuesday that Mitchell will be placed on the six-game injured list with a broken fibula. The injury originally occurred in the week one loss to the Toronto Argonauts. In last weeks’ loss to BC, Mitchell played the whole game with the injury that resulted in the worst game of his career with four interceptions.

So far this season, Mitchell has completed 44 of 73 passes for 542 yards with one touchdown and five interceptions. Calgary is off to an 0-2 start which has not occurred for the team in a decade. This is the second straight season Mitchell was placed on the six-game injured list after suffering a pectoral injury. He missed most of training camp with a lower-body injury.

“I tried to power through. Maybe not my smartest move in the world but we talk about grit and things like that here and I’ve always tried to play through anything if I can to help my team.

During his news conference Tuesday, Dickenson did not state whether Canadian quarterback Michael O’Connor or American rookie quarterback Jake Maier will start Friday against Montreal. O’Connor has appeared in two CFL games recording 173 passing yards and one touchdown. Coach Dickenson says regardless of who starts at quarterback, he’ll trust them to get the job done.

“Just go be yourself. I’m not looking to have a quarterback carousel, I’ve never done that. I’ve always been a guy that the starting quarterback needs to learn, that you can make mistakes and still be in there. I’m not in the business of playing safe, be aggressive. Go for the throws you think are there . . . .whatever you see, trust your eyes and let it rip.”

Many speculate that O’Connor will be the favorite to be the starter at quarterback due to his experience. Should he start at quarterback, he’ll become the second Canadian to start at quarterback this season behind Nathan Rourke of the BC Lions. Mitchell did tell reporters that he expects to be back this season to play.
