Tiger-Cats trade American linebacker Patrick Nelson to Redblacks for an undisclosed player

As the Tiger-Cats near the end of their Week 5 bye week, they have made a personnel move to find flexibility within their roster potentially. American linebacker Patrick Nelson has been traded to the Redblacks for an undisclosed player from the Redblacks negotiation list. What the Tiger-Cats end up gaining from this trade will go along with regards to interpreting the value of this trade for Hamilton. The 25-year-old, 6’0″, 216-pound linebacker was acquired by the Tiger-Cats in 2021. Nelson has been on the practice roster since he was signed and has not seen any action in regular-season games.

Before coming to Hamilton, Nelson played 22 games at Southern Methodist University, producing 146 tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, 3 interceptions, and forced 2 fumbles. Before playing at Southern Methodist, was a contributor at the University of Illinois where he produced 140 tackles, 5 tackles of loss, .5 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles. Nelson is a native of Chicago, Illinois. Linebacker is an area of need for the Redblacks, so this acquisition makes sense from the Ottawa perspective. The impact this trade makes on the Tiger-Cats roster will not be known until the undisclosed player is identified by Hamilton.
