Overview

The Toronto Argonauts travel to Mosaic Stadium for WestJet Thanksgiving Weekend having been officially eliminated from playoff contention following a 47-29 loss to Hamilton in Week 18. The Argonauts have dropped three consecutive games and sit at 5-11 on the season, holding the third spot in the East Division. Despite their disappointing campaign, Toronto’s offence ranks third in the CFL with 29.1 points per game, averaging 25.8 points per contest overall.

Saskatchewan enters Week 19 as West Division leaders at 11-4, looking to extend their advantage at the top of the standings. The Roughriders defeated Toronto 39-32 in their Week 3 matchup earlier this season. Head coach Corey Mace earned his 20th career victory in just 33 games last week, placing him third among Roughriders coaches for wins through their first two seasons. Saskatchewan holds a strong 9-1 record when leading at halftime and are a perfect 10-0 when ahead after three quarters.

Key Players

Kevin Mital (WR) The receiver ranks second in the CFL with 87 receptions this season, accumulating 761 yards and four touchdowns on 104 targets. Mital has been a consistent target in Toronto’s passing attack and will be crucial for new starter Jarret Doege.

Damonte Coxie (WR) Coxie has hauled in 48 catches for 854 yards and six touchdowns on 75 targets, providing a deep threat in the Argonauts’ receiving corps.

Lirim Hajrullahu (K) Toronto’s kicker has been exceptional this season, with the team converting 91.1 per cent of field goal attempts. Hajrullahu has connected on 16 field goals, including five from 50-plus yards.

Trevor Harris (QB) The Saskatchewan quarterback recorded his sixth career 4,000-yard passing season with 4,097 yards through 18 games. Harris has completed 315 of 433 passes for 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and holds a 5-5 career record against Toronto.

A.J. Ouellette (RB) The former Argonaut running back sits just 10 yards behind the league’s leading rusher with 1,110 yards on 222 carries. Ouellette has recorded the most carries by a Roughrider since Kory Sheets in 2013 (287) and has found the end zone eight times while adding 32 receptions for 234 yards.

Keys to the Game

Quarterback transition for Toronto With Nick Arbuckle ruled out for the season with an arm injury, Jarret Doege makes his first CFL start. Doege completed 34 of 49 passes for 323 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions in relief last week. Limiting turnovers will be essential for Toronto to remain competitive.

Defensive pressure on Harris Saskatchewan’s offence has gained momentum with Harris throwing for 351 and 341 yards over the past two games. Toronto defenders J-Min Pelley and Branden Dozier must generate pressure while defensive backs Benjie Franklin, Tarvarus McFadden and Derek Slywka contain Saskatchewan’s receiving threats.

Ouellette’s ground attack The Roughriders running back averages 14.8 carries per game and faces a Toronto defence allowing 103.3 rushing yards per contest. With Ouellette chasing the league rushing title, Saskatchewan will look to establish the ground game early against a porous Argonauts run defence that has surrendered a league-high 512 points this season.
