Week 9 ended with a lot of drama in a big upset, with BC laying a beating on Winnipeg on the road with a surprising 35-19 win. Montreal gave no mercy to Ottawa, as Montreal continued their winning streak with a 34-13 victory. The Calgary offence was no match for Hamilton, as Calgary opened an offensive bombardment in a 44-20 victory. The week ended with Saskatchewan defeating Edmonton 28-26 on the road, tying the season series at the moment.
Hello CFL Fans! Here are your CFL News Hub Power Rankings after Week 9.
Record: 7-1
Previous ranking: 2
Montreal entered Week 9 with one goal, and one goal only. Never take an opponent for granted.
Montreal was dominant vs. Ottawa; the Alouettes took control of this game and never let it slip away.
With a comfortable 24-13 lead after halftime, Montreal continued to own the line of scrimmage and out-muscled Ottawa in every category.
Gamon Green had a solid showing with 9 tackles. Geoffrey Cantin-Arku contributed to the Montreal defence with 7 tackles and 1 sack. Lorenzo Burns and Joshua Archibald each had 1 interception.
The defensive showing of Montreal was probably the best overall performance they have had this season, and the Ottawa offensive line had no answers, making any adjustments.
Congratulations to Tyson Philpot! – He becomes the fastest Canadian to hit the 1,000-yard receiving mark in the fewest games in 8 games played. He joins Hall Paterson in 1956, along with Terry Greer in 1983, to accomplish this feat.
Week 10 will be another special game to circle on your calendar, as Montreal hosts Edmonton. For Edmonton, this will be their third game in a row vs. a CFL juggernaut, after completing a back-to-back series with Saskatchewan.
Next game: Saturday, August 8th, 2026, vs. Edmonton.
2 – Edmonton Elks
Record: 6-2
Previous ranking: 1
Edmonton was running on high emotions last week with their win over Saskatchewan. Only this time, they faced each other once more in a back-to-back series.
Once again, Edmonton hit a wall in establishing a balanced offence to incorporate the running game.
The Edmonton defence had an incredible game with the likes of Dariel Djabome, Kobe Williams, Kordell Jackson, Chelen Garnes, Tyrell Ford, Kenny Logan Jr., and Joel Dublanko. All of them were spot on when it came to deflecting a pass or making a big tackle, or stalling a Saskatchewan drive.
Many were picking a split in this series, and it came to fruition.
At the end of the day, it was a hard-fought game where they came up just a touch short.
The Elks will now focus on a Montreal team that has been playing some great football. This will be a game for both fan bases to enjoy as both squads have a lot of talent on display.
Next game: Saturday, August 8th, 2026, in Montreal.
Record: 5-2
Previous ranking: 3
Saskatchewan was looking to answer the bell after their defeat to Edmonton last week.
Entering Edmonton, the Roughriders played an old-fashioned, grind-it-out football game, as was the case with Edmonton.
After being down 7-0, Johnny Johnson countered with an impressive 87-yard kickoff return, giving Saskatchewan possession deep in Edmonton territory. The Riders would eventually tie the game at 7-7.
It was a seesaw battle; once Saskatchewan had a big play, Edmonton would respond.
With 06:43 left in the game, Trevor Harris would hit KeeSean Johnson for a 4-yard touchdown. A 2-point conversion would later follow, giving Saskatchewan a 28-19 lead.
Saskatchewan would not give up the lead and held on to a 28-26 win.
Next game: Friday, August 7th, 2026, vs. Ottawa.
Record: 4-4
Previous ranking: 4
Aside from running up the scoreboard this season, one of the biggest equations for Calgary in the last few weeks was the defence. The defence that was allowing a lot of points has complemented the Calgary offence.
The Stamps appear more balanced now and look to go full steam ahead. Calgary was physically dominant, making the Hamilton offence a non-factor.
Once Vernon Adams had the ball back in his hands, he tore up an exhausted Hamilton defence in large chunks of the game. And once again, he added to his no-interception streak to open a CFL season. He now has 21 touchdown passes, to 0 interceptions.
Next game: Thursday, August 6th, 2026, in Toronto.
Record: 4-4
Previous ranking: 5
Sitting at a 4-4 record is not the worst place for Winnipeg to be in at the moment. The problem is the inconsistencies.
Winnipeg literally let BC walk all over them, as they had no solution.
The Bombers had a decent running game. However, the passing game looked average at times.
On defence, they had no answer to halt the ground attack as the BC offensive line pushed the Winnipeg front seven at will.
Next game: Winnipeg will be on a bye in Week 10. Their next scheduled opponent will be at home vs. Ottawa on Friday, August 14th, 2026,
Record: 3-4
Previous ranking: 6
The Double Blue were on a bye in Week 9. They will have a tough test at home in Week 10 as their official Home Opener of the 2026 CFL Season after being displaced for the 2026 World Cup.
With Calgary firing on all cylinders, it will be the Argos defence that will have a difficult task throughout the game to disrupt a potent offence that seems to score at will, especially in the 2nd half.
Next game: Thursday, August 6th, 2026, vs Calgary.
7 – BC Lions
Record: 2-5
Previous ranking: 8
After giving the keys to Chase Brice previously, it was Kaidon Salter who would start the first game of his CFL career.
It was also a game where the BC running game was the main story of the game. Kaidon Salter, along with Zander Horvath, tore up the Winnipeg defence with a total of 351 rushing yards. Emani Bailey would rack up an additional 26 rushing yards for a combined total of 377 yards on the ground.
Rarely in football would you witness this, with no need to pass the ball.
For one of the rarest occasions, that is all BC had to do: run the football.
It would be interesting now with their upcoming game vs. Hamilton. Continue with the running game. However, with only 96 passing yards, Kaidon Salter will have to develop his passing game until Nathan Rourke is available.
Next game: Saturday, August 8th, 2026, vs. Hamilton.
Record: 3-5
Previous ranking: 7
It is always tough when you are waiting for a quarterback to take control of a game to buy time until Bo Levi Mitchell becomes available. The play of Tre Ford appears to be taking another setback. When Harrison Frost took the helm, the results were no different. At the moment, looking at the Hamilton quarterback room, nobody is taking the bull by the horns.
Calgary came to play and forced Hamilton to make plenty of miscues. Hamilton punted on six occasions throughout the game, as the offence was unable to create any real threat.
With Calgary exploiting Hamilton’s weak offence, they took no mercy, piling up 20 points in the 4th quarter alone.
This could get uglier for Hamilton if they cannot find a solution to a stagnant offence. They will now head to BC. BC is riding on an emotional high after their win vs. Winnipeg.
Next game: Saturday, August 8th, 2026, in BC.
9 - Ottawa Redblacks
Record: 0-7
Previous ranking: 9
It is beyond difficult to describe the level of play for Ottawa in the 2026 CFL season.
Let us be clear on this one. The blame is not on Jake Maier. He is one of the few bright spots on the football team. Unfortunately for Jake Maier, he is facing a lot of pressure game-in-and-game-out. You can have the best quarterback in the league and nothing would change. The Ottawa offensive line has been exposed for the majority of the 2026 season. And at the moment, they have a lot of work to do even to make the 2nd half of the season a bit more enjoyable for the fans in the Nation’s Capital.
It will not get any easier, as they have a date in Saskatchewan in week 10.
Next game: Friday, August 7th, 2026, in Saskatchewan.
