Bombers Making Moves Ahead Of Labour Day Classic

While the game is not actually played on Labour Day, it always is a classic! With the Bombers at 6-4, and needing some help at multiple positions – including receivers – the Bombers went out and made some moves.

Before we look at the signings, we will look at the injury report after the first practice this week.

The Bombers are getting so thin at receiver that in their game last week vs. Montreal, Chris Streveller needed to come in and play receiver. With the Bombers needed to make some moves so they added receivers Kyran Moore and Cam Echols to the practice roster.

Cam Echols has a small sample size, and had been targeted 47 times in 2024 coming up with 31 receptions.

Then there is Kyran Moore.

“With Saskatchewan, Moore would record 210 receptions for 2,351 yards and 10 touchdowns over 46 games. In his rookie season, Moore would lead the league with 389 punt return yards and scored two return touchdowns. He would also return 22 punts for 213 yards the next season.

In 2023, he signed with the Edmonton Elks and immediately became a key part of their offense, leading the team with 69 receptions for 743 yards and four touchdowns in 18 games.” – source

Who’s In And Who’s Out At Receiver?
The fact is that at the time of writing this we just do not know. But if I had to put together some guess here they are.
*Nic Demski likely plays in the game against Saskatchewan…remember I just said these were my best guesses. The only thing that would keep him out is lingering concussion issues as I am speculating that concussion protocol took him out of the game against Montreal.
*Schoen definitely plays in Saskatchewan.
*Moore and Echols do not play in Saskatchewan.

What About Ontaria Wilson?
If you are a fan of the Bombers, then you know that Wilson was released by the NFL Jets, and that the Bombers retain his rights. But do not count on Wilson coming back any time soon. I think he tries for some other NFL looks. I could see a scenario where the Bombers sign him late in the season for a hopeful playoff run; and then release him afterwards for him to try and get more NFL looks. Unconventional? Sure. But it would not take Wilson long to pick up the Bomber playbook, even with a new offensive coordinator.

More To Come?
I do not think the Bombers are done yet making moves. I am sure that they are looking at NFL cuts as well as former CFL players that have yet to crack a squad this season; or ones that have been recently released. The Bombers know what they are looking for; they just have to find it. I have said it before and I will say it again, this year seems like 2019 or 2021.

In 2019 the Bombers were lacking in the quarterback position. If you would have told anyone that the Bombers would have signed Zach Collaros I would not have believed you. Yet, the Bombers made that move and not only filled a hole they had, but found a very good player.

Winnipeg would face a similar issue in 2021. The team looked good, but the kicking was suspect. All season long, commentators were asking, ‘What are the Bombers going to do?’ Even Bob Irving had no clue what the Bombers were about to pull off. Out of nowhere – or at least that is what it seemed like to those not in the know – the Bombers sign Castillo.

Well now it is 2025, and the Bombers need a receiver – at least one. I have no clue who they are going to find, but I am very convinced that they are going to look under every rock to fill this void. And just for fun, remember the years the Bombers made the move to fill their lagging position; 2019 and 2021…that just so happened to be the years the Bombers also won the Grey Cup.

What do you think about the Bombers’ moves? Are they going to find the missing pieces, or not this year?
