Injury has struck the Quarterback position once again, this time in the USFL. Alex McGough whose ankle injury has designated him as “Out” for Saturday’s game against the Houston Gamblers, has opened another opportunity for Montell Cozart a former CFL QB who spent parts of three seasons with the Calgary Stampeders.
Cozart before joining the Stampeders, Cozart played in 38 games between the Kansas Jayhawks, and the Boise State Broncos. Cozart who was extremely versatile was used as a QB, Running Back and Wide receiver and even punted once while playing for the Jayhawks. Now it appears Cozart will be primarily backing up J’Mar Smith who was most recently the inaugural Offensive Player of the Week for the USFL 2022 season.
Though Cozart’s time in the CFL wasn’t by any means memorable he has appeared in 21 games and is 1 for 1 passing for 11 yards. But even though he may not have the most impressive stats, Cozart brings is experience and a professional demeanor that this young league needs. At only 26 Cozart can assist Coach Skip Holtz in grooming a young offense on what it means to be a professional. At a minimum he provides the Stallions a capable back-up in a league that is now down to their second QB on their “Short List”.
As we’ve seen with J’Mar Smith all these USFL players are one opportunity away from becoming a “verified” star. Hopefully, Smith can enjoy his time in the limelight for a little bit while McGough recovers but if not HUB Football Camp Alum Montell Cozart will be ready to answer the call.
