Edmonton Elks Injury Report

Edmonton will be without one of their top players on the defence with LB Nick Anderson (Groin) out for this game. He will be followed by LB Michael Brodrique (Shoulder), WR Zach Mathis (Back), and DB Royce Metchie (Ankle).

Hamilton Tiger-Cats Injury Report

Hamilton will be without FB Daniel Bell (Elbow), FB Ante Milanovich-Litre (Hamstring), OL Jordan Murray (Knee), and DB Robert Panabaker (Hamstring).

Players to Watch:  Edmonton Elks

QB – Cody Fajardo

He comes with more than enough experience to steer the Edmonton offence in the right direction.  He has completed 35 of his passes on 44 attempts, with 453 yards and 3 touchdowns since becoming a starter last week.  This will be his 2nd start this season.  Cody Fajardo needs to be in a zone for Edmonton to have any success against Hamilton.

LB – Nyles Morgan

Unfortunately for Edmonton, they will be without the services of LB Nick Anderson.  Fellow LB Nyles Morgan will have to shoulder the brunt of the load in anchoring the Edmonton defence.  He has been a cornerstone of the Edmonton defence since coming to Edmonton.

Players to Watch:  Hamilton Tiger-Cats

QB – Bo Levi Mitchell

There are only positives to say about Bo Levi Mitchell.  From his playing days in Calgary and now in Hamilton, he is a player who will always keep you in a game.  With 15 touchdown passes this season, entering week 9, Bo Levi has the football IQ to pick apart any defence.

WR – Kenny Lawler

He is one of the best in the CFL when it comes to man–to–man coverage.  His skill set is something to see live, where he wins a lot of those one-on-one battles against a defender.  He currently sits 3rd in the receiving yards category at 673.  The off-season investment in acquiring such a talent has paid dividends for Hamilton.

Keys to an Edmonton Victory:

The defensive line needs to create pressure to help out the secondary.  It won’t be easy.  What Edmonton needs to do is create pressure as much as possible to force Bo Levi Mitchell to throw the ball in areas where he is not comfortable.

The defensive secondary needs to play some tight football when defending.  Just like the defensive line can help out the secondary, the reverse can also occur.  If they can create some coverage sacks, it will all be beneficial for Edmonton.

The running game needs to be effective.  Nothing is better than a balanced offence seeing progress.  There has been a trend so far this season that when the running game is ineffective, many teams abandon the run and switch only to the passing game.  Edmonton cannot be too predictable against Hamilton, or they will pay the price.

Prediction

If there is any motivation for Edmonton, they should reference Ottawa, which caused an upset over Calgary.  That is the beautiful part about this game.  No matter the record, no matter how bad your season is at this given point, anybody can beat anybody.

Final Score

Hamilton Tiger-Cats:  36

Edmonton Elks:  27

This could be one of these games, as we saw with Hamilton for the majority of the season.  They can stay close in the game late in the 3rd quarter or at the mid-point of the 4th quarter when they begin to wear you down, use the clock to their advantage, capitalize on special teams, and execute points off of turnovers.

If Edmonton can find some magic to reverse its fortunes, then we'll talk about a possible upset here.  However, factoring in the fact that Hamilton is the hottest team in the CFL, they are just a more polished team than Edmonton.
