The Montreal Alouettes announced on Tuesday that they have released American running back Mike Weber Jr. With the release of Weber Jr. the competition for the starting running back role for the Alouettes narrows down. RB Mike Weber Jr. – Ohio State (5’10, 211 lbs, 26 y/o)
Mike Weber Jr. played in 37 games for OSU with 13 starts from 2016 to 2018. He rushed 455 times over that span for 2,676 yards (5.88 yards per carry) with 24 rushing touchdowns. He was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2016 and was Second-Team All-Big 10 in 2016.
He was selected in the 7th round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He has since spent time on multiple NFL practice squads including the Kansas City Chiefs when they won the Super Bowl in 2020.
>Weber was drafted in the 2022 USFL Draft by the New Jersey Generals but unfortunately was injured ahead of the season and later released. In November he signed with the Orlando Guardians of the XFL but the team folded in the XFL-USFL merger. He was previously signed by Montreal in January.
The Alouettes have seen good competition in camp among the running back group for who will take over as the franchise’s starting running back following the departure of Williams Stanback this offseason. With 1 week remaining in the CFL preseason, there is a possibility that the release is a positive for Weber Jr. as he may perhaps still have a chance to pivot to a different team before final roster cuts take place.
