Week 7 was most definitely all that it could be in terms of CFL action and this game specifically didn’t disappoint in terms of excitement either. A few disappointments, yeah, but overall, the game proves that the Bombers are certainly in it to win it.
As I’ve been suggesting in recent pieces, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers defense is quite the group of players, as they proved this past game against the Edmonton Elks on Saturday night…DeAundre Alford and Adam Bighill both achieving defensive touchdowns.
Game and play details
The odds were already stacked against the Elks, as Trevor Harris is injured and will be missing a reported six games. It showed a tad in this game, as is quite obvious.
Other starts, b
ut for the Bombers was Ali Mourtada, who made his debut in the CFL kicking for this game. As the action unfolded, though, he missed a try at a 28-yard field goal. He would go on to miss 3 field goal attempts during the game…sadly not a great start for this rookie player. But the Bombers got off pretty strongly right from the get-go: 80 yards in nine plays and coincidentally, from Collaros to Darvin Adams, a 12 yard touchdown pass.
Edmonton however regained the lead in the third quarter, and all because of Wilder, with an impressive 19-yard touchdown run.
Overall the gam
e was a tad back and forth, but the Blue Bomber defense proved to be the deciding factor overall, and the game finished 37 to 22.Quotes by some of the players and coaches after the game
Andrew Harris, Winnipeg running back, who has been in the news as of late due to last week’s Banjo Bowl Brawl, said of the game and specifically his team’s defense:
“Our defense, scoring two touchdowns for us, that is absolutely amazing when they are able to create turnovers like that and capitalize on them with points on the board…Our defense has been our backbone. They really flexed when we needed them to.”

Of Elks quarterback Taylor Cornelius, head coach for the Elks, Jaime Elizondo said:
"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">“I thought he played really poised…Listen, for having one day of practice, I thought he came out and showed some things that were really, really encouraging and I thought the guys responded really well to him…He didn’t get flustered. I know he’s going to be hard on himself with the mistakes he made. But those interceptions were a credit to the defense; they had some good breaks on the ball.”
