It can be tough being a CFL or NFL athlete at the peak of your game. Spectators demand perfect performances, week-in, week-out. The rewards for success can be tremendous, with adulation, trophies, and handsome paycheques. But failure and defeat can lead to despondency and anxiety. That’s a lot of weight to place on anyone’s shoulders, especially in a sport where the average career lasts 3.3 years, and players’ average retirement age is 27. One aspect that can alleviate the tension is when the top performer achieves a balance between their sporting lives and leisure pursuits. Time away from the grids can be especially enhanced by loving relationships. But where do star players find time for romantic connections? And how do these get-togethers impact well-being?
Ways football stars meet their romantic partners
Football players are likely to meet their significant others in a range of places, many of which will seem no different to the spectators who cheer them on from the stand, week in, week out. They might drop by for a meal after a game, with steakhouses being a particular favourite (football requires a lot of stamina, so coaches may place these prime athletes on strict protein-building regimes). Because they’re so well paid, they might even stretch to booking tables in fancier restaurants. On the other hand, many of these athletes love nothing better than popping into a local McD’s for an instant fix. Social gatherings are always popular, in bars or nightclubs. Some might hop onto dating sites to check out the chat room buzz and discover locations of any exciting gatherings in their neighborhood.
Short-term flings are beneficial for mental health and self-esteem
Taking that later point, one reason a lot of CLF and NFL stars are drawn to the digital environment is convenience. These outlets have gained a formidable reputation for providing a safe space where people from a variety of backgrounds can always feel welcome. A hookup website can be an excellent place to tap into a diverse pool of singles, all of whom are committed to genuine connections. But it can be so much more than simply a matchmaking resource. These are platforms where people sharing interests can congregate and join a vibrant community. Hookups can be an excellent way of clearing the head, allowing players and fans alike to let off steam. The CLF and NFL can be stressful, so a casual fling or two can help to alleviate some of the pressure.
Marriage can be a great support during the career path
On both sides of the border, Canadian football and American football are flourishing. Both variations of the sport have certain unique characteristics, but they also have much in common. In the NFL and CFL, star athletes are often getting hitched. Having a stable relationship to fall back on can give players a welcome boost, especially when their teams aren’t performing so well on the field. Here are some of football’s most glamorous – and solid – couples.
Zach and Julie Ertz
Zach and Julie seem to epitomize the term ‘sporting power couple.’ They were both college athletes at Stanford University, Zach earning a reputation as a football player, while Julie excelled at soccer. Mutually respectful of each other’s prowess, this led to friendship, and then romance. They wed in 2017.
Joe Montana And Jennifer Wallace
Four-times Superbowl winner, quarter-back Joe Montana played for an impressive 16 seasons. While working on a razor commercial, he bumped into Jennifer Wallace, tying the knot in 1985 and going on to have four kids.
JJ Watt and Kealia Ohai
First romantically linked in 2016, JJ has won the AAP NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award on three occasions, while Kealia has been a professional footballer for Chicago Red Stars for three years. Widely known for posting pictures on their Instagram feeds, they got married in 2020.
Positive work-life balance improves efficiency for an athlete
Athletes need to apply maximum focus on being the best they can be. This covers every aspect of their lives, from their diets to exercise regimes, their hobbies, and the activities they get up to when they have any spare moments. The key to making the most of their opportunities to excel on the field is to ensure they also have something to look forward to during their leisure time. It’s all about making sure they balance work and life and recognise the signs when they’re not doing enough to relax. Not giving space to those precious moments with a love interest or their loving family can lead to a dip in self-esteem. This can have a detrimental effect on their performance on the field, not to mention their relationships away from the team. But if they can find a way to make the most of every opportunity, they can flourish.
