In a League of Parity, Can Saskatchewan Find a Way to Repeat?

With both the CFL and Global drafts complete, it is time to begin preparing for the 2026 CFL season, which will be here before we know it. Each team has a selection of new players, and with them come renewed dreams and desires to lift the Grey Cup at season’s end. Training camps are opening, rosters are taking shape, and every team is convincing itself that this could be the year. But one storyline stands above the rest: can the defending champion Saskatchewan Roughriders do it again?

Repeating is Easier Said Than Done

Repeating in the CFL, or any league for that matter, is never easy. The CFL’s structure comes with a hard salary cap, high roster turnover, and relatively short seasons, which create parity and make back-to-back Grey Cup runs so difficult. Currently, many popular Canadian betting apps have the Roughriders with the third-best odds to win the Grey Cup, at +600. Only the Alouettes (+300) and the BC Lions (+400) have better odds to win. Still, Saskatchewan enters 2026 with something most teams don’t: continuity and belief.

The Roughriders’ championship run last season wasn’t built on a fluke or lucky bounces here and there. It was a full-season effort, anchored by strong QB play from Trevor Harris, a physical defence, and one of the most balanced rosters in the league. The core members of the championship team are returning for the upcoming season, which is driving confidence in the Roughriders as a repeat contender. The question is whether that core can elevate again while every other team is specifically building to knock them off.

Offensive Formula

Offensively, Saskatchewan’s chances will hinge on consistency. They return their starting QB and RB from last season, which is a big boost for continuity and familiarity on offence. Their ability to control tempo, protect the quarterback, and finish drives was a major strength during their title run. Defences around the league will spend the offseason dissecting that film, looking for tendencies and weaknesses. This adds a challenge for the Roughriders, as they will need to stay ahead of the adjustments defences make to stop the offence and add new wrinkles so as not to get complacent by staying with last year's play style.

Defensive Formula

On the defensive side, Saskatchewan still project as one of the league's toughest units and expects to continue their strong play on the line of scrimmage. One of their keys to success is to pressure the QB consistently and speed up their offensive rhythm. If they force the QB to think and move faster than he is comfortable with, it makes life easier for the rest of the defence. The secondary can play tight and collapse on quick routes if they know the pass rushers can get home and force the QB into low-percentage plays. That formula will make them tough to beat week to week. Combine that with an efficient offence, and you’re looking at a strong complementary football team that will compete at a high level and make a push at a back-to-back championship season.

Opponent’s Mindset

Another factor working against a repeat is the mental grind. Opposing teams will view their matchup with the Roughriders as their own personal measuring stick, meaning Saskatchewan will get every team's best effort. There should be no “easy” games or overlooked matchups when they do their prep week to week. Maintaining focus over an entire season is often just as difficult as building a championship roster in the first place.

In a league defined by parity, dynasties are rare. That’s what makes the opportunity in front of Saskatchewan so intriguing. If they can find the same success on offence, continue to be nasty on the interior line of scrimmage on defence, avoid the injury bug, and stay focused under pressure, they could carve out a special place in recent CFL history.

But if there’s one thing the CFL guarantees, it’s unpredictability. And that’s exactly what makes this season worth watching.
