Saskatchewan Roughriders linebacker and team captain Jayden Dalke died on July 18, 2026, in a highway collision near Lumsden, Saskatchewan. He was 30. Dalke played 68 regular-season games for the Roughriders over four seasons and was part of the team's 2025 Grey Cup championship.

The Roughriders confirmed his death in a statement on July 19. "A relentless warrior on the field, Jayden's determination, toughness and work ethic inspired his teammates, who cared deeply for him and are heartbroken by his passing," the team said.

From Leduc to the CFL

Dalke was from Leduc, Alberta. He played four seasons with the Edmonton Wildcats of the Canadian Junior Football League from 2015 through 2018, then joined the University of Alberta Golden Bears in 2019.

He played safety for the Golden Bears. In his first season he recorded 56 tackles, three interceptions and one forced fumble in nine games and earned first-team U Sports All-Canadian honours. He added second-team All-Canadian recognition in 2021.

The Roughriders drafted Dalke in the sixth round of the 2022 CFL Draft, 54th overall.

CFL career

Dalke made the roster as a rookie and played 18 games in 2022, recording 15 defensive tackles and 11 special teams tackles. He started 14 games in 2023 and posted 41 defensive tackles, two forced fumbles and one interception. He later moved to linebacker after entering the league as a defensive back.

Over 68 regular-season games, Dalke recorded 69 defensive tackles, 31 special teams tackles, three forced fumbles, one sack and one interception. He was on the roster when Saskatchewan won the 2025 Grey Cup, a 25-17 win over the Montreal Alouettes.

The Roughriders named Dalke a team captain.

Statements from the team and the league

The Roughriders statement described Dalke's role beyond the field. The team said he had "a unique gift of making the people around him feel special and valued," added that "No one ever left a conversation with him without a smile," and called him "the true definition of what it means to be a Saskatchewan Roughrider."

Teammate Tommy Stevens said, "Dalke was the best teammate and the best friend a guy could ever ask for."

CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnston called Dalke "a passionate competitor who played with incredible heart." Johnston said the league lost "a teammate, a Canadian brother and a friend" and extended condolences to Dalke's family, the Roughriders and his community.

League tributes

The CFL and its teams marked the loss during Week 7. Before the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Ottawa Redblacks game on July 19, 2026, both clubs held a moment of silence for Dalke. Further tributes are expected at Roughriders and league games as Week 7 continues.

How fans can pay respects

The Roughriders are expected to hold a tribute at Mosaic Stadium during the team's next home game. Fans can share messages through the Roughriders' official channels at riderville.com and on the club's social media accounts, where the team is expected to post details on any moment of silence, jersey patch or helmet decal.

The Roughriders are also expected to share information on any memorial fund or family-designated charity. Fans can check the team's channels for those details in the days ahead.
