5 CFL Legends Who Made the NFL Jump

Every year, a handful of CFL standouts head south chasing the Lombardi instead of a Grey Cup ring, and most of them find out just how hard that jump really is. Take a look at any NFL odds tracker, and you’ll see that top favorites aren’t really based around Canadians. Instead, these teams are all about American power. And it’s been like that fr ages.

Nathan Rourke, for example, gave it everything over two seasons, working out for four different NFL teams, and still couldn't stick. He's in good company historically — plenty of CFL stars have tried and failed to translate their success across the border. But a select few didn't just make the roster. They became stars. Here are five of the greatest CFL-to-NFL success stories in football history.

1. Joe Theismann

CFL: Toronto (1971–1973) | NFL: Washington (1974–1985)

Theismann was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 1971 but chose to head north to the Argonauts instead, earning two All-Star selections and a Grey Cup Final appearance over three seasons in Toronto. Washington eventually traded for his NFL rights in 1974, and Theismann went on to win Super Bowl XVII, claim league MVP, and make two Pro Bowls south of the border.

2. Warren Moon

CFL: Edmonton (1978–1983) | NFL: Houston, Minnesota, Seattle, Kansas City (1984–2000)

Passed over in the NFL Draft process, Moon signed instead with the Edmonton Eskimos and delivered one of the greatest runs in CFL history, leading the club to five straight Grey Cup titles. When he finally moved to the NFL as a free agent in 1984, he went on to make nine Pro Bowls, win NFL Offensive Player of the Year, and eventually earn a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

3. Doug Flutie

CFL: BC, Calgary, Toronto (1990–1997) | NFL: Chicago, New England, Buffalo, San Diego (1986–89, 1998–2005)

Deemed too small for the pro game out of college, Flutie struggled in his first NFL stint before heading to the CFL, where he became arguably the league's greatest ever player — three Grey Cups, three Grey Cup MVPs, and six Most Outstanding Player awards. That CFL dominance earned him a second NFL chance with Buffalo, where he won Comeback Player of the Year.

4. Cameron Wake

CFL: BC (2007–08) | NFL: Miami, Tennessee (2009–2019)

Undrafted out of Penn State and released by the Giants before he ever played a snap, Wake rebuilt his career with the BC Lions, where he became a two-time Most Outstanding Defensive Player and two-time All-Star in just two seasons. That performance was enough to convince Miami to sign him, and Wake went on to rack up 100 career sacks and five Pro Bowl selections as one of the best pass rushers of his NFL generation.

5. Jeff Garcia

CFL: Calgary (1994–1998) | NFL: San Francisco, Cleveland, Detroit, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay (1999–2009)

Undrafted in 1994, Garcia spent his early years in Calgary backing up fellow CFL-to-NFL success story Doug Flutie before taking over as the Stampeders' starter and winning a Grey Cup and game MVP in 1998. San Francisco took notice, and Garcia went on to make four Pro Bowls as an NFL starting quarterback.

The exception, not the rule

For every Theismann, Moon, Flutie, Wake or Garcia, there are dozens of CFL standouts who never got the NFL chance to match their North of the border success. That's exactly what makes this list worth celebrating: these five didn't just get a look. They became genuine NFL stars, proving the road from the CFL south is difficult, but not impossible, for the right player at the right time.
