The Edmonton Elks won convincingly 42-12 vs. Toronto last week. With the Elks back in the win column, they have the privilege of playing at home this week when they square off against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who are experiencing an inconsistent season.

It’s a divisional battle in which Winnipeg has had the upper hand in recent seasons. Only this time, the Elks are a more improved team and are fully capable of winning their Week 12 encounter vs. Winnipeg.

Game Notes:

1st place after 10 games: Currently at 7-3, the last time Edmonton was in 1st place at the 10-game mark was back in 2015.

Is Winnipeg repeating the 2024 season? At the 5-4 mark, they are the same as in 2025 but two more wins than in 2024, when they were 3-6 after nine games. It was a historic turnaround year; the Bombers went on an 8-game winning streak, finishing 11-7 with a Grey Cup berth for the 5th consecutive year.

Sergio Castillo: He went 4-for-4 vs. Ottawa last week, including a 56-yard field goal tying Troy Westwood with 40 field goals of 50+ yards.

Trey Vaval: He recorded his league-leading 9th big play of the season on special teams (4 punt returns, 4 kickoff returns, and 1 missed field goal return). Trey Vaval leads the CFL with 1,659 total kick return yards in 2026 (184.3 yards per game).

Winnipeg is 3-0 on the road: The Blue Bombers are a perfect 3-0 this season – their longest streak since 2022, when they went 7-0 on the road.

Edmonton dominance: This season, Edmonton has generated 103 points off of turnovers, including a season-high 27 points against Toronto last week.

Players to watch: Edmonton Elks

DB – Tyrell Ford

Tyrell Ford has been in the conversation regarding the Defensive Most Outstanding Player Award. He has been a quarterback’s nightmare. He has also been on a hot streak, adding to his interception totals in the last 6 weeks.

WR – Austin Mack

Austin Mack has been Cody Fajardo’s favourite target this season. He is a game-changer for the Elks at key moments, adding to an Edmonton lead.

RB – Justin Rankin

He has been cold when involved in the running game for Edmonton. His talent will be beyond the running game, as he is valuable in the passing game.

QB – Cody Fajardo

Week to week, Cody Fajardo has been what you want in a quarterback. His precision can beat you in the short game and taking a shot with the deep ball. His ball security has been great this season, not costing the Elks in a regrettable situation.

The front seven.

They will be tested against a solid offensive line that is aggressive and loves to initiate contact at the snap of the ball. It would be interesting if they could display a different look at the line of scrimmage to throw a wrench into their blocking schemes.

Players to watch: Winnipeg Blue Bombers

LT – Stanley Bryant

He might be up there in age. The 16-year veteran is one of the best all-time at his position in the CFL with 243 games played.

DB – Evan Holm

He has not experienced an interception this season. Evan Holm is as reliable as it gets in the defensive secondary. He currently has 39 tackles this season.

DB – Nick Hallett

He has a good eye for anticipating a play. He might not be a ball hog for an interception. What Nick Hallett does so well is the basics that are instrumental game to game: great coverage, tackles, and breaking up a pass.

DE – Willie Jefferson

He will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer when his playing days are done. He is one of the most feared players in the CFL if he is not on your team. His initial jump on the ball creates many problems for a right tackle. He is so unique that he becomes unpredictable, as he can drop back into coverage and cause an interception or break up the pass.

RB – Brady Oliveira

He is having another great season for the Bombers with 123 carries, 732 rushing yards, 4 touchdowns, and a 5.95 average yards per carry. If he is not running, he can beat you as a receiver. Brady Oliveira also has an eye-popping 215 yards and 1 touchdown. The most incredible part is his 181 yards after the catch.

Keys to an Edmonton victory:

Force Winnipeg into a one-dimensional offence.

Winnipeg had its fair share of inconsistencies this season. If Edmonton can limit the big gains from the running game, it will benefit the Edmonton secondary if they force Winnipeg into the passing game the majority of the time.

Be physical.

Toss Winnipeg’s record out the window. They are one of the most physical teams in the CFL. The core has been there for a long time. They will be physical, so answer the bell when needed.

Get coverage sacks.

It's been a long time coming since Edmonton had a dominant secondary. Anytime you can force Zach Collaros into placing the ball in a dangerous area, or keep him in the pocket to buy time for a sack, it will be a good day for the defence.

Bring a different look in the running game.

If Edmonton can create something new that would catch Winnipeg off guard, it would be great to witness in opening up the running game.

Score off of turnovers.

With the points off turnovers currently at 103, it is already impressive. Do not change your approach in the takeaway battle.

Prediction

Expect a physical game for both teams. Moreover, not the obvious with the physicality of the defence, but rather the contact from the offence onto the defence.

Both teams will fight tooth and nail for the initial yards after a catch, along with running the ball into contact after the line of scrimmage.

Final Score

Edmonton Elks: 26

Winnipeg Blue Bombers: 24

It's hard to go against a team that has been successful by punching the ball out of the opposition or creating a lot of turnovers. This is not to say that Winnipeg can't counter the same way. The Edmonton defence has been brilliant the last 6 weeks with turnovers, excluding the blowout loss to Montreal in Week 10.

Seeing a large margin of points collectively would be a tall order for both teams. Expected a medium level of points from both football clubs.
