The Edmonton Elks put on a clinic with their Labour Day return match last week in Edmonton. It was all systems go in a 53-16 blowout win for the Gren and Gold over Calgary in Week 15.

That was the fun part.

The reality is that there is still a lot of football to be played until the season is completed. Their next opponent will be the Toronto Argonauts in a Week 16 tilt on the shores of Lake Ontario at BMO Field.

Players to watch: Edmonton Elks

DB – Tyrell Ford

He is the league leader in interceptions. Tyrell Ford is a quarterback’s worst nightmare. He can also change a game's momentum on a dime.

WR – Austin Mack

Austin Mack is one of the best in the CFL in route running. He makes it easy for Cody Fajardo to get open and develop a play for a big shot downfield.

RB – Justin Rankin

Justin Rankin is as good as they come when controlling the game. He runs with a lot of power both as a runner and a receiver. If he has open space, good luck taking him down. His second- and third-gear speed is exceptional.

QB – Cody Fajardo

He is a quarterback who is great at staying in the moment. Cody Fajardo has a keen eye on the pre-snap development where the defence perceives the play. He might keep the game simple at times. However, don’t think for a second that he cannot bait a defence and break them down.

DB – Chelan Garnes

His 40 tackles this season have played a big role in why Edmonton has been the turnaround team this season. Chelan Garnes has been a key figure in complementing the Edmonton secondary.

SB – Joshua Cephus

Joshua has been a hidden gem in the Edmonton offence with 476 receiving yards, 3 touchdowns, and 13.6 average yards after the catch on only 35 receptions.

Players to watch: Toronto Argonauts

QB – Chad Kelly

His negative stat is the 20 interceptions. However, he is still a gun-slinger with 4,404 passing yards and 29 touchdown passes. If Kelly gets into a rhythm, he can torch your defence.

WR – Kevin Mital

He’s been a great receiver in clutch moments since being drafted by the Argos in 2024. If his play has been great so far in three seasons, you wonder what the ceiling is for Kevin Mital.

WR – David Ungerer III

For a wide receiver who plays way above his size, he is also deadly in carving up a defence. David Ungerer III is a stingy player who takes on a challenge with a big bite.

DL – Ralph Holley

He has the speed, size, and strength to cause a lot of problems for an offence. Ralph Holley’s timing on the line of scrimmage is something of a veteran.

DL – Soane Toia

Soane Toia might not have any statistics that will jump out at you at a glance. What he has brought to the table this year for the Argonauts is his ability to stack the line of scrimmage to halt the running game. His instincts make it a lot easier for the Toronto front seven,

Keys to an Edmonton victory:

Put pressure on Chad Kelly.

Chad Kelly has lowered his interception totals in the last 4 games. With that said, he has thrown a lot this season. Whether it is pressure from the Edmonton front 7, or the secondary, he is a different quarterback when facing plenty of pressure.

Winning the total yards in the running game.

ShunDerrick Powell looked impressive in relief for an injured Javon Leake as a secondary running back last week with 97 yards to ease some of the workload off Justin Rankin. If they can get a two-headed monster winning the running game battle vs. Toronto, it will be a potent offence tomorrow.

Keep the offence on the field.

The Argos defence has gotten better in the last 3 weeks at playing against the run. Keep the pressure on the Argos defence. Extend plays with the running game and set up the passing game.

Own the game clock.

The Elks have had an overall better running game this season as opposed to Toronto. The more you own the clock and eliminate important lost minutes for the Toronto offence, it will be a big advantage for Edmonton.

Prediction

Final Score

Both teams have been playing great football lately, regardless of the team records at the moment.

For Edmonton, it’s hard not to believe that they have a sound defence, forcing 33 turnovers this season.

For Toronto, they need this game to create more separation from Hamilton, and at minimum, hold onto 2nd place to host a potential playoff game.

Edmonton Elks: 37

Toronto Argonauts: 32

In the end, Edmonton wins the turnover battle and becomes one of the X–factors for Edmonton to hit the 11-win mark.
