Calgary Stampeders Roster Shuffle: A Detailed Look
The Calgary Stampeders have announced two critical changes to their roster that will undoubtedly affect their performance in the upcoming Canadian Football League games. The moves involve the addition of veteran American receiver Markeith Ambles and the release of national defensive back Demetri Royer.
Markeith Ambles Returns to the Red and White
Markeith Ambles, a notable name in the CFL, has rejoined the Stampeders’ practice roster. Born in McDonough, GA, the 6’02”, 197-pound receiver has a strong connection with the Red and White, having spent four years and three seasons (2018-19, 2021) with them. In those 29 regular-season games, Ambles made 117 catches for 1,399 yards and seven touchdowns.
Ambles’ career saw a highlight when he joined the Toronto Argonauts as a free agent in February 2022, setting career highs with 72 receptions for 737 yards and five touchdowns, contributing to the Boatmen’s championship win. The veteran receiver also boasts a Grey Cup ring from his time with the 2018 Stampeders.
Before turning professional, Ambles had an impressive collegiate run, playing one season at both Arizona Western and Southern California, before concluding with two seasons at Houston.
Demetri Royer Released
On the other side of the roster changes, Canadian defensive back Demetri Royer has been released. Royer, a third-round selection in the 2022 CFL Draft from Western Illinois University, was born in Clearwater, Fla., but obtained Canadian citizenship through his father, who hails from Quebec.
Royer’s career with the Stampeders was unfortunately marred by injuries. The five-foot-eleven, 193-pound defender spent his entire rookie season on Calgary’s six-game injured list and returned to the list to start the current season. Although moved to the practice roster for the club’s last two games, the 26-year-old did not see any game action during his time with the team.
In his final season of college football in 2019, Royer recorded 74 total tackles, five pass breakups, and one fumble recovery over 11 starts for the Leathernecks.
What’s Next for the Stampeders
With these roster moves, the Stampeders (3-5) are looking to enhance their performance as they visit the B.C. Lions (6-2) on Saturday, Aug. 12, with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT.
The return of Ambles, a proven veteran with substantial contributions, brings excitement and expectation to the offensive line. In contrast, Royer’s release closes a chapter that never truly opened due to injuries.
These decisions reflect the ever-changing dynamics of professional football, where performance, strategy, and the need to adapt often drive tough decisions. For fans and analysts alike, these roster changes offer a fascinating insight into the Stampeders’ current state and future prospects. Only time will tell how these moves will shape the remainder of the season for Calgary.
