The BC Lions announced on Friday the release of middle linebacker Micah Awe. Awe was the reigning CFL tackle leader after recording 114 defensive tackles over the 2025 regular season, 12 more than Tony Jones’ 102 tackles for 2nd in the league.
Awe played in 18 games this past regular season for BC, recording 114 tackles, 2 interceptions, and a forced fumble. He added 9 tackles over the 2 playoff games.
Awe has played in 117 CFL regular-season games, recording 563 tackles, 7 sacks, and 7 interceptions over 8 seasons.
Awe entered the CFL with the BC Lions, where he played from 2017 to 2018. He played for Toronto in 2019 and signed with Winnipeg for the 2020 season, which was cancelled due to covid. He played for Ottawa in 2021. In 2022, he played 1 game for the BC Lions and 13 for Montreal. He played for Calgary from 2023 to 2024.
He played for Texas Tech from 2012 to 2015, where he recorded 171 solo tackles, 95 assisted tackles, and 1.5 sacks. He signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent in 2016, where he recorded 6 tackles over the preseason before spending a couple of weeks on the practice squad.
Moving forward, Darnell Sankey is likely to be the starting middle linebacker for BC, who was signed in December. Sankey had 103 tackles for Montreal this past season, putting him 3rd in tackles.
