BC Lions Sign Former Bronco & Charger DB Essang Bassey

The BC Lions announced on Thursday the signing of American defensive back Essang Bassey.

DB Essang Bassey – Wake Forrest (5’10”, 190lbs)

Essang Bassey played his college ball for Wake Forrest where he played in 52 games with 40 starts from 2016 to 2019. He recorded 162 solo tackles, 66 assisted tackles, 12.5 tackles for a loss, a sack, 5 interceptions, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and 50 passes defended over his collegiate career.

Bassey signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2020. He played in 12 games with Denver as a rookie, with 3 starts, recording 23 tackles, 2 passes defended, and an interception.

2021 saw him play 1 game for the Denver Broncos and 1 game for the LA Chargers. In 2022, he played in 14 games for Denver, and then in 2023, he played in 4 games for Denver and 11 for the LA Chargers. He has played in 43 total NFL regular-season games, recording 60 total tackles and 7 passes defended.

Bassey spent time with the Detroit Lions in 2024 and the Washington Commanders in 2025. He has played in 10 NFL preseason games, recording 21 total tackles and 3 interceptions.
