Blue Bombers Ready to Unleash Revamped Offense Behind Collaros and New Coordinator Tommy Condell

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers wrapped up training camp with quarterback Zach Collaros looking refreshed and new offensive coordinator Tommy Condell bringing infectious energy to a retooled attack that could define the franchise's 2026 season.

After back-to-back seasons where Collaros admittedly struggled, the veteran quarterback appears rejuvenated working with Condell's system. The Blue Bombers made a significant investment in their offensive overhaul, bringing in all-star caliber talent like Jarrell Broxton on the offensive line.

Collaros Embraces Fresh Start in Contract Year

Despite entering the final year of his contract, Collaros dismissed any added pressure, focusing instead on the team's potential.

"No, not at all. It's got a special feeling because it's the next one. And yeah, I think we have a really good club," Collaros said. "We've had a great training camp, so I'm looking forward just to go out there and working with the guys."

The quarterback praised the additions of players like Broxton and the overall energy surrounding the new offensive system. Head coach Mike O'Shea echoed those sentiments, noting that Collaros appears to be his usual fiery self heading into the season.

Condell Brings Championship Pedigree and Philosophy

Condell, who previously faced the Blue Bombers in multiple Grey Cup battles, brings a simple but effective philosophy to Winnipeg's offense.

"Hopefully effective in executing, you know, that's what we want. We wanna be able to score points. We need to be able to protect the ball. That's number one, you know, and try to create explosives," Condell explained.

The new coordinator emphasized execution over surprises, believing preparation trumps gimmicks. His energy has been infectious throughout camp, with O'Shea noting Condell's "tremendously positive and high energy" approach.

Hogan's Remarkable Sacrifice Creates Unique Coaching Dynamic

Perhaps the most intriguing storyline involves Jason Hogan, who agreed to stay on staff despite being replaced as offensive coordinator. Both Condell and O'Shea praised Hogan's professionalism in what could have been an awkward situation.

"I think Jason, you know, in fact, you know, when we got a chance to interview again, I think that's, honestly, he needs to be here," Condell said. "He's going to be able to do anything it takes to be a great teammate and also be able to help this team win and help me individually being here."

O'Shea called Hogan's decision "remarkably different" in professional sports, highlighting the coach's character and commitment to the organization.

Thomas Transition Brings Emotional Adjustment

The retirement of veteran Jake Thomas created an emotional void for Collaros, who struggled with losing his longtime teammate and meeting room companion.

"Sad. I miss him. I mean, I'm now I'm sitting next to Jake Ceresna and the team meeting room, but I can't, you know, I can't tap him on the head," Collaros said with obvious emotion. "I was very sad the day he called me."

Thomas has transitioned into a coaching role, bringing the same leadership qualities that made him valuable as a player to his new position working with the team's special units.

Young Addition Rounds Out Coaching Staff

The Blue Bombers also added Braylon Addison to the coaching staff, with Condell praising the young coach's intelligence and ability to connect with players.

"He knows the offensive, but he knows the CFL. He's highly intelligent, you know, and he loves to learn," Condell said. "I do believe that he's able to command a lot of respect in regards to how he communicates."

The combination of veteran leadership, new energy, and strategic additions has created an atmosphere of optimism in Winnipeg as they prepare to challenge for another Grey Cup championship.
