Week 3 of the CFL kicks off with another excellent quarterback matchup. The BC Lions head to the Hammer for a Week 3 matchup against the Tiger-Cats. BC is looking to bounce back after a tight 27-31 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders last week on the road, while Hamilton comes off an impressive 37-27 road win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

B.C. Lions (0-1): The BC Lions opened the season with a tough road loss in Regina but showed plenty of fight. Quarterback Nathan Rourke remains the engine of the offense, and the Lions have one of the most dangerous skill groups in the league. After dropping a close one to the defending Grey Cup champs, they’ll look to get back on track against a Hamilton team that looked sharp in Week 2.
BC will need to see stronger play from the defensive side after giving over 400 yards of passing offense to Trevor Harris last week and 3 touchdowns, and have another difficult quarterback to defend against this week in Bo Levi Mitchell with talented receivers to throw to such as Kenny Lawler and Kiondre Smith.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats (1-1): Hamilton bounced back with a convincing 37-27 victory over Winnipeg last week after losing their opener in overtime to Montreal. Bo Levi Mitchell was highly efficient, completing 19 of his 24 passes for 287 yards and 3 TDs, and the offense found balance with a strong ground game led by Larry Rountree III.
The Tiger-Cats will try to protect their home turf and build momentum in the early season. Hamilton also allowed 400 yards passing last week after losing star corner Jamal Peters to a scary injury to the head and neck injury, and he is questionable for this contest.
Lions' Keys to the Game
Pressure on Mitchell
BC’s defensive line needs to get after Bo Levi Mitchell and limit his time in the pocket. Mathieu Betts and Levi Bell form a strong edge duo that can disrupt rhythm. Mitchell was sharp last week but can be affected by consistent pressure.
Contain the Run Game
Hamilton showed they can run the ball effectively. Darnell Sankey and the BC front seven must keep L.A. Rountree III and the Tiger-Cats’ ground attack in check to force Hamilton into predictable passing situations. BC has a good room of defensive tackles featuring Jonah Tavai, Nathan Cherry, Casey Sayles, and Tibo Debaillie who are all good run stoppers.
Offensive Efficiency
Rourke and the receiving corps need to click early. Last week’s offense moved the ball but couldn’t quite close it out. This week there are a number of injuries to the Lions’ receiving core with Stanley Berryhill, Jevon Cottoy, and Seven McGee already being ruled out, and Keon Hatcher listed as questionable.
Get the Run More Active
Last week BC had only 40 yards rushing from the 12 carries (3.33 average) and 2 touchdowns on the rushes by the running backs.
5 Lions to Watch
12 QB Nathan Rourke
Rourke completed 24 of his 37 passes for 330 yards last week.
20 RB James Butler
Butler rushed 9 times last week for 35 yards and 2 touchdowns and caught 2 passes for 10 yards.
18 WR Justin McInnis
With injuries to the receiving room, McInnis will be more heavily relied upon. Last week he caught 8 of his 10 targets for 129 yards.
90 DE Mathieu Betts
Betts had 3 tackles and a sack last week.
6 HB T.J. Lee
Lee had a team-leading 8 tackles last week and a knockdown.
5 Tiger-Cats to Watch
19 QB Bo Levi Mitchell
Bo Levi Mitchell has completed 84.1% of his passes for 841 yards and 3 touchdowns with 1 interception over 2 games.
37 RB L.A. Rountree III
Rountree leads the league in rushing yards thus far after rushing 31 times for 147 yards (4.7 average) over 2 games.
85 WR Kiondre Smith
Smith was the most targeted on his team last week, catching 5 of his 6 targets for 92 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Myron Mitchell caught all 5 of his targets for 50 yards while Keric Wheatfall caught 3 of his 5 for 102 yards. It was a quieter day for Kenny Lawler, who caught 2 of his 3 for 17 yards, but he can tear up the stats sheet at any time.
95 DE Julian Howsare
Howsare had 2 sacks last week against Winnipeg and has 5 tackles on the season.
38 Hill
Weakside linebacker Braxton Hill led the Ti-Cats in tackles last week with 8. Hamilton limited Brady Oliveira to 32 yards on 8 carries last week. Middle linebacker Ryan Baker had 7 tackles last week while strong side linebacker Reggie Stubblefield, who has been one of the best linebackers in the league in coverage, had 5.

Score Prediction:
I predict the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to win 30-27. BC has injuries in their receiving room to overcome and needs to get a few things tighter on defense yet.
