For the third week in a row, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats kick off another week of CFL football. During Week 3 of the 2026 CFL season, an explosive matchup between two of the CFL's best quarterbacks will take place in Hamilton when the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (1-1) host the BC Lions (0-1). In Week 2, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats bounced back from a Week 1 loss with a balanced offensive attack that could not be stopped by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. On the other hand, the BC Lions and Nathan Rourke went on the road to face the defending Grey Cup champions in Saskatchewan, and while they played efficient football, they came up short in a 31-27 loss.
Coming into this game, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are looking to continue building momentum on the offensive side of the ball after an outstanding performance passing and running the ball last week in Winnipeg. The combination of Bo Levi Mitchell and his arsenal of elite receivers led by Kenny Lawler, along with the ground production of Larry Rountree III, makes the Tiger-Cats a tough matchup for the BC Lions defensive unit. To add to those difficulties, the Tiger-Cats' offensive line appears capable of physically taking over a game and dominating in the trenches. However, defensively, the Tiger-Cats are feeling the effects of attrition early in the season, with linebacker Wynton McManis still sidelined with a knee injury, and cornerback Jamal Peters likely to miss this week due to a concussion sustained last week.
The BC Lions come into their matchup in Hamilton after a Week 1 bye and a narrow loss on the road to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Like the Tiger-Cats, the Lions are led by outstanding Canadian quarterback Nathan Rourke, who leads an offense capable of producing explosive plays. In addition, the Lions have a strong running game led by former Tiger-Cats running back James Butler. Defensively, the Lions have some of the best pass rushers in the CFL, and they will be a challenge for the Tiger-Cats' offensive line as they attempt to protect Bo Levi Mitchell.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats Key to Victory #1: Disrupt the Lions' Vertical Passing Game
The most important matchup in this game will be between the BC Lions' vertical passing game and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats' banged-up defensive secondary. With cornerback Jamal Peters likely not playing this week, it is very important for the Tiger-Cats' pass rushers to get to Nathan Rourke early and often. Ideally, Hamilton can accomplish that goal with a four-man pass rush, because if they are forced to bring extra rushers to successfully pressure Rourke, they will leave holes in the secondary that Rourke has the ability to expose the Tiger-Cats pass coverage.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats Key to Victory #2: Establish and Maintain Offensive Balance
Last week, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats showed that they are at their best offensively when they can strike a balance between their running and passing games. Tiger-Cats running back Larry Rountree III showed that he has the ability to take over games on the ground because the offensive line in front of him is capable of knocking the opposing defensive line off the ball. In addition, Bo Levi Mitchell did a nice job of getting the ball to many different receivers rather than focusing on getting Kenny Lawler the ball. If wide receiver Keric Wheatfall is able to continue being an effective passing threat, the Lions will not be able to double-cover Lawler, which will allow him to be more open in the Tiger-Cats passing attack.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats Key to Victory #3: Win the Turnover Battle
Another huge factor in determining who wins this game is the ability to win the turnover battle. That means the Hamilton Tiger-Cats will need to protect the ball offensively and, defensively, force turnovers. Last week, the Tiger-Cats were able to play more zone coverage behind their front seven, which allowed them to keep the game in front of them and even force a key interception. This week will be more challenging because, at this point in their careers, Rourke is a more dynamic passer than Zach Collaros. Therefore, the Tiger-Cats defensive pass rush is going to have to keep Rourke under pressure, and the Tiger-Cats secondary will need to be opportunistic when it comes to taking the ball away from the Lions.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats Key to Victory #4: Control the Line of Scrimmage on 2nd Down
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats' offensive game plan needs to focus on controlling the ball when they have possession by picking up first downs on 2nd down and putting together long drives. That combination will help the Tiger-Cats defensive efforts by keeping the ball out of Nathan Rourke's hands and limiting the Lions opportunities to produce explosive plays. However, long drives are useless for Hamilton unless they can finish those drives with touchdowns rather than field goals, and that means the Tiger-Cats will need to play their best offensive football in the red zone.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats Key to Victory #5: Contain the BC Lions' Special Teams Spark
Along with playing well offensively and defensively, the Tiger-Cats need to be detailed in their approach to special teams. The BC Lions have several potentially explosive playmakers on their special teams units, and if the Tiger-Cats do not stay focused on those plays, the Lions will set themselves up for more success offensively and defensively. It is especially important for the Tiger-Cats to have outstanding kickoff and punt coverage, and kicker Marc Liegghio will need to make all of his kicks count and provide positive contributions to the scoreboard for the Tiger-Cats.
Game Prediction: Hamilton Tiger-Cats 31, BC Lions 28
