Bombers QB Zach Collaros Signs 1 Year Extension

In theory the Winnipeg Blue Bombers know who their starting quarterback will be in 2026. I say, “in theory” because contracts are not guaranteed, and injuries happen. And while I do not expect the former to come into play, the latter certainly could.

Let me be the first to admit that I was wrong. When the Bombers first signed Zach Collaros I thought it was a terrible move and thought the guy should retire from football for the benefit of his own health. I was wrong.

He is a two time Grey Cup champ with the Bombers winning both in 2019 and in 2021. He has helped the team reach the Grey Cup 5 years in a row! He was named he CFL’s MOP (Most Outstanding Player) in 2021 and 2022 – and could have won that other years as well.

He is number 3 in all time wins as a Bomber quarterback – remember the revolving door at quarterback from around 2013 onward until Buck Pierce. I dare not even try and remember all the quarterbacks they had. But just to highlight how obscure those quarterbacks were, and how much that door did revolve, let me throw out one quarterback’s last name and see if you remember him, Marve. (Play this game with your friends and see who is the first that can recall his first name without the help of the internet). Collaros’ stats are truly amazing, and the revolving door has stopped. We will find out in short order if the increase in interceptions in 2024 carries over into 2025.

Sure, there are some knocks on Collaros that he has not played well in Grey Cups and some of the playoffs; and I will not absolve him of that. Quite frankly, he has to be better in the playoffs, and the Grey Cup, should he make it there again. But so does the whole team. They got absolutely destroyed in the 2024 Grey Cup, in the 2023 Grey Cup there were right there until the end, and they lost by 1 play in the 2022 Grey Cup. Had the whole team played better in 2 of those Grey Cups we would be talking about team that won 4 of the 5 last Grey Cups. But they did not, and we are not. So instead the focus shifts to the play of Collaros.

I for one, am satisfied with this signing so long as it is not just Winnipeg kicking the can down the road one more year without finding a replacement for the starting quarterback position. Because it is glaringly clear, that they have no clue who their next starter will be.

What do you think? Should the Bombers have signed Collaros to an extension? Who should they have as their next heir apparent; and do they have that guy already on their team?
