The CFL’s Edmonton Elks are bolstering their offensive lineup with the addition of American wide receivers Danny Davis III and Jerminic Smith, as announced by the team on Wednesday.
Danny Davis III, an alum of the University of Wisconsin, accumulated a total of 131 receptions, garnering 1,642 yards and 14 touchdowns over 51 games during his collegiate career from 2017 to 2021. His performance off the field was equally note-worthy; Davis was recognized with a spot on the Academic All-Big Ten Team in his senior year of 2021.
After his tenure with the Badgers, Davis took the next step in pursuing a professional career and joined the Green Bay Packers for training camp in 2022. In his debut during the preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers, he secured two receptions that added up to 45 yards and crossed the end zone for one touchdown. Davis’s stint with the Packers concluded in late August when he was released from the team.
Jerminic Smith, aged 28, revisits the CFL after a previous brief period with the Ottawa Redblacks in 2019, in which he made eight receptions for 87 yards over three games. His recent endeavors in football took place in the Indoor Football League with the Frisco Fighters during 2022 and 2023 seasons. Smith’s time with the Fighters was marked by a significant 143 receptions, 1,813 yards, and 33 touchdowns over 31 games, earning him All-IFL First Team honors in 2022. Prior to his professional lift-off, he spent time on the fields of the University of Iowa for two seasons (2015-2016) and concluded his college journey at Southwest Baptist University in 2017.
The forthcoming 2024 season holds significance for the Edmonton Elks as it will be their 75th in the CFL. With the inclusion of wide receivers Davis and Smith, the team is looking to reinforce their attacking options and set the stage for a memorable year. More information on the Elks’ preparation for the upcoming season can be expected as team activities progress.
