So far during training camp in 2026, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats have made two rounds of roster cuts. It seems like the Tiger-Cats are still looking for a player to help boost their defensive secondary. The greatest need in their secondary is at the Sam linebacker position, otherwise known as the Field halfback. This position was vacated when Jonathan Moxey left the team after the 2025 season.
The next player to step into the competition for the Sam position is American defensive back Gavin Gibson, who was recently signed by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, according to a team press release.
Gavin Gibson, a 6'0", 185-pound defensive back from Hickory, North Carolina, built an impressive college football resume at the University of Maryland (2022-2023), East Carolina University (2024), and the University of North Carolina (2025). While playing for the Maryland Terrapins, Gibson played in 20 games and recorded 24 solo tackles, 8 assists, and 1.0 quarterback sack. In 2024, Gibson transferred to East Carolina and played in 13 games, recording 26 solo tackles, 26 assists, and 3 interceptions. Gibson finished his college football career under the tutelage of Bill Belichick at North Carolina, where he played in 12 games and added 26 more solo tackles and 13 assists.
During his college football career, Gibson displayed versatility, excelling at Nickel, Strong Safety from the box, and Free Safety in the middle of the field. In each role, he demonstrated excellent Football IQ and embraced leadership on the field, constantly communicating with teammates. Furthermore, he excelled as an open-field tackler and consistently supported the run on the perimeter. Critics have noted his lack of raw speed, but Gibson showcases explosive trigger speed. This quick reaction allows him to drive downhill rapidly and disrupt screen passes and perimeter runs.
