After spending eight years in the CFL, American quarterback Matthew Shiltz made the decision to retire from the CFL. Initially, Matthew Shiltz announced his retirement on his social media accounts in December 2025. However, Shiltz is back in the CFL News cycle by choosing to sign a 1-day contract with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to officially end his career as a Hamilton Tiger-Cat.
Shiltz started his eight-season career with a four-year stint playing backup quarterback for the Montreal Alouettes. During that time, Shiltz played in 50 games for the Alouettes but started only five. While playing for Montreal, Shiltz completed 145 passes out of 238 pass attempts for 1,866 yards with 8 touchdown passes, along with 11 interceptions. In addition, Shltz ran the ball 50 times for 313 yards with 2 rushing touchdowns.
Due to his success during the 2021 season, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats signed Shiltz to be a backup for American quarterback Dane Evans. Over the 2022 and 2023 seasons, he played in 28 games, starting 6. While with the Tiger-Cats, Shiltz completed 193 of 280 passes for 2,491 yards, tallying 11 touchdowns against only 7 interceptions. He also ran the ball 51 times, gaining 312 yards and scoring 2 rushing touchdowns.
In 2024, Shiltz chose to leave the Tiger-Cats in search of a better opportunity and signed a one-year contract with the Calgary Stampeders. However, Shiltz continued to serve as a backup quarterback, appearing in 10 games but starting only two. Shiltz completed 34 out of 62 passes for 438 yards, resulting in 2 touchdown passes and 2 interceptions. In addition, Shiltz ran the ball 14 times for 133 yards and 1 rushing touchdown.
In his final season, Shiltz served as a backup quarterback behind Dru Brown for the Ottawa Redblacks. Appearing in 18 games but starting only one, he completed 29 of 47 passes for 283 yards, tallying 1 touchdown and 7 interceptions. He added to his stats by running the ball 9 times for 31 yards and rushing for 1 touchdown.
