So far this offseason, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are working hard to hold their ground with some of the most critical position groups from the 2025 edition of the Tiger-Cats. It started with the Tiger-Cats keeping their quarterback room together, including Bo Levi Mitchell, and all of their backups. Hamilton has also made keeping their offensive line together a priority, and they continue to look to build on that foundation for 2026.
Another key position group that the Tiger-Cats have chosen to keep together is their defensive secondary, which is one of the top defensive units in the CFL. Earlier this offseason, Hamilton made it a priority to re-sign cornerback Jamal Peters and safety Stavros Katsantonis. Hamilton’s next move is to re-sign boundary halfback Destin Talbert for two more seasons, a position critical to the Tiger-Cats’ defensive success.
As the Tiger-Cats boundary side halfback, Talbert has one of the most challenging jobs on the defensive side of the ball. When given the opportunity, CFL teams prefer to attack the boundary side of their passing game because short passes into space are more efficient. However, Talbert is one of the best boundary-side defenders in the CFL, and that forces teams to spend more time attacking the field side, which is significantly more difficult.
At 6’0″, 190 pounds, Talbert lacks some of the physicality that is needed to excel as a field-side halfback, but on the boundary side, he makes up for that with his elite speed and athleticism. Talbert has played the entirety of his two-year CFL career with the Tiger-Cats, including all 36 regular-season games. During those games, Talbert recorded 113 solo tackles and 5 interceptions.
Due to Talbert’s athleticism, the Tiger-Cats can routinely change their defensive looks and pass coverages, making it difficult for opposing teams to know how to attack Hamilton’s coverage. Talbert has outstanding ball skills, outstanding mental toughness, and a high football IQ. Defensively, Talbert excels in Press-Man coverage and is also an outstanding playmaker as a Zone defender. In addition to his defensive value, Talbert is also a consistent contributor to the Tiger-Cats special teams units.
