Chad Kelly hit 10,000 career passing yards Friday night, and Toronto Argonauts head coach Mike Miller didn't hold back afterward. The Argos beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at home in a hard-fought divisional battle, and Miller spent much of his postgame press conference crediting the quarterback he's coached through his entire Toronto career — and thanking God for the chance to even be out there competing.
"One thing that I said that I have failed to say before, I want to thank God for tonight and the opportunity to compete," Miller said. "I haven't said that recently. My mind was on other things, but I want to make sure that I make sure that's very clear."
Kelly's Milestone and the Bond With His Coach
Miller didn't need much prompting to talk about Chad Kelly reaching the 10,000-yard mark. He described a quarterback whose preparation drives the whole operation.
"He's an unbelievably hard worker. If you saw his preparation, we push each other. The details that we talk about, the details that we execute with. And he's just a fighter. I mean, he's just going to give you a chance every week. He's capable of making any throw on the field. And I'm very proud of him. And he deserves all the accolades that come with it because that guy pays the price. He loves being an Argo. He loves this city and he loves playing at BMO." — Mike Miller
Miller also pulled back the curtain on one specific touchdown, describing how Kelly came to the sideline with a read he liked. "They came to me and he showed me and said, hey, we got — I think we have a chance at this," Miller said. "I said, all right, as long as it's there, they're two over two, we got a chance. And so it hit. That's when he was pointing to me. So it's really those moments that are pretty special."
Isaiah's Breakout Validates the Draft Call
The other big storyline out of the win was rookie running back Isaiah, who Miller says is only scratching the surface. Miller referenced the outside noise around drafting a Canadian running back early and made clear the doubters got it wrong.
"I know it was said on our draft that you would never take a Canadian running back that high. Well, he's a special back and you guys got to see some of that tonight. He's just getting started. He's a very hard worker, smart kid, again, plays with great passion." — Mike Miller
Miller pointed to running backs coach Kadeem Carey for developing the group, adding that fellow back Quaylon "did a nice job" as well.
Weather? Not an Excuse
Asked how much the weather factored into the game, Miller shrugged it off as something outside his control. "As you guys know now, what we talk about, that's nothing that we can control. So you got to go out, we got to execute," he said. He credited his offensive line for digging in on the ground game despite the conditions, while giving Hamilton its due. "Give Scott and Hamilton credit. That's a good football team. They're well coached and they've got a lot of talent there."
Physicality Up Front and Sean Levin's Impact
Miller singled out the offensive line's physical performance, crediting position coaches Don Picard and Colin — known around the building as "Plug" — for getting the big backs and the front rolling. "They worked hard through the week. And again, Don Picard and Colin, they do a great job with the O-line and those guys responded," Miller said.
He also had plenty to say about Sean Levin's presence since joining the team, framing his value well beyond what shows up on the field.
"You see the play on the field, but it goes way beyond. He's an outstanding human being. He's a great leader with his experience. He's vocal. He reminds the guys where we are and what's taking place. And he keeps a handle on the focus too, from a player standpoint. We are just so thrilled to have him." — Mike Miller
Protecting Home Field
Miller stayed process-focused when asked about confidence heading into the next stretch of the schedule, calling the win a "hard-fought" division result that the team will enjoy briefly before getting back to work. But he made clear how much holding serve at home meant given Toronto's schedule ahead.
"To come out and get a win for our home crowd, you guys are aware of our schedule. So when you get a chance to play at home, we got to make it count. And I felt we did that tonight. We got great fans. We felt the energy. They kept pushing... it was a great night. Big division win at home. Doesn't get any better." — Mike Miller
With another battle against Hamilton looming in a couple of weeks, Miller's message was clear: enjoy this one, then get back to the process. Check the latest CFL standings and the full schedule as the Argos push forward in a crowded East race.
