Miller Says Kelly Is MOP; Kelly Points to Voters After Win in Winnipeg

Toronto Argonauts head coach Mike Miller said he considers Chad Kelly the league's Most Outstanding Player. Kelly left the question to voters. Both spoke after Toronto's win in Winnipeg, a 30-28 result over the Blue Bombers at Princess Auto Stadium on Friday night.

Miller was asked whether Kelly should be the favourite for Most Outstanding Player.

"Do I think he's the MOP? Yeah. I love Chad Kelly, and he would be the first to tell you as well. Those things are great, and I believe he's playing at that level for sure. But we're about the next contest, and we're about competing and working for wins," Miller said.

Kelly was asked the same question. "That's up to the voters," he said.

On 6,000 Yards

Both were asked whether Kelly can reach 6,000 passing yards this season.

"Anything's possible, I'll say, but that's our goal is to win football games. And that's what Chad's first and foremost goal is," Miller said. "And we're about process-driven. None of that's changed. Those aren't even things that we talk about. We talk about execution and process-driven, and getting better every day."

Kelly's answer was shorter. "I'm focused on winning. That's all that matters to me."

One Game at a Time

Both were asked whether Toronto can catch Montreal in the East Division standings, and whether the Argonauts would have a chance in Montreal in an East Final.

"Our focus right now is to watch the film from this game, learn from it, and then we've got a really good BC team coming in next week. We're going to take them one day at a time. That's what we've done since the first day of training camp," Miller said.

Kelly's version: "It's just one play at a time, one game at a time. That's all we're focused on."

The Sideline Exchange

Miller was asked about an exchange with Kelly on the sideline during the game.

"Chad and I having conversations on the sideline. Chad and I are very close and enjoy our relationship. He is just such a great competitor. ... He did some things that you guys probably wouldn't even notice, but it's how he manages the situation," Miller said.

Miller on the Defensive Response

Miller was asked what changed for his defence after Winnipeg led 21-7 in the second quarter. He said nothing changed.

"I don't know that anything changed. That's a good football team and I thought we had a chance just to settle in. And we say there's going to be ebb and flow, but we're going to line up every down. We continue to work hard, play physical and continue to stay in the moment," Miller said.

He credited his defensive coaches. Toronto's 2026 staff lists Greg Quick as defensive coordinator, Demetrious Maxie as assistant head coach and defensive line coach, Jovon Johnson as defensive backs coach and Bubba Walker as a defensive assistant.

"Again, Greg Quick, Maxie, Jovon, and Bubba. I think our defensive staff do a really good job, as do our veteran leaders. And we just had guys making plays all over, and sometimes it takes a little time, but they kept at it, and I liked our mindset at halftime as a team. We just talked about what we needed to do in the next 30 minutes, very businesslike approach," Miller said.

Miller was also asked about red zone execution.

"Naturally we're all frustrated when it doesn't happen, but then we got to line back up and go to work. ... I tried to instill that and we talked about it in training camp, and we said we're going to be tested, our resolve, our mental toughness, and it's got to build now. And they accepted that challenge," Miller said.

Kelly on His Own Game

Kelly was asked where his combination of feet, arm and aggressiveness came from.

"Just playing football since I was a kid. I started out playing as a fullback, defense, linebacker, D-end, corner. ... I just want to have fun," he said.

He named the quarterbacks he modelled his game on. "I grew up wanting to imitate Mike Vick out there on the field. ... But also Tom Brady and Peyton Manning were the generals out there, so I kind of feel like I wanted to imitate all three of those guys growing up."

Kelly was asked about Miller's emphasis on aggressiveness since taking over as head coach. "It's whatever the defense gives us at the appropriate time to be aggressive. You got to be on the attack, but I just think that defenses are really good now. It feels like they have a lot better players than years past, and the D-line is getting significantly better. So it's just you got to pick your poison when to hit it and when to be tame."
