The Montreal Alouettes announced on Monday they have resigned Canadian running back Jeshrun Antwi for the 2024 season. They also announced the signing of defensive lineman Avery Ellis and defensive back Najee Murray although news of their singing was first announced by the Canadian Press on Saturday.
Montreal Alouettes Re-Sign Najee Murray and Avery Ellis
“We are very pleased that these three veterans are back with us,” stated Alouettes General Manager Danny Maciocia “Jeshrun brings a lot to our Canadian ratio. He knows our playbook and his attitude is excellent. Ellis has played the role of big brother for many players in our locker room since 2022. The guys respect him. Murray was at the top of his game before he got hurt last year, we can’t wait to see him again.”
RB Jeshrun Antwi – Calgary (26 y/o, 6’0, 220 lbs)
Antwi was a 6th-round draft pick for Montreal in 2019. He elected to return to his school for the 2019 season and the 2020 CFL season was cancelled due to covid. He has played in 3 seasons for Montreal since his rookie season in 2021. He has played in 50 regular season games rushing 181 times for 1,005 yards (5.55 average) and 1 touchdown. He has also caught 47 passes for 321 yards.
Antwi showed he could be a reliable starting runningback in 2022 following an injury to William Stanback. In 2022 he played in all 18 games with 6 starts and rushed 106 times for 600 yards (5.66 average) and added 200 yards receiving.
In 2023 Antwi once again played in every game for Montreal although he saw his usage decline compared to the 2022 season. This past season he rushed 39 times for 229 yards and a touchdown. He added 3 carries for 16 yards over the Alouettes postseason run and against Toronto in the Eastern Final. Antwi’s yards per carry has increased every season so far in his career.
Antwi was the first running back to be re-signed by the Alouettes. William Stanback and Walter Fletcher will both become free agents on February 13 if a contract is not signed. The Alouettes have added 2 American runningbacks to their roster Mike Weber Jr. and Marcus Williams Jr. this offseason.
