Montreal Alouettes Release 20 Players in Final Cuts Including WR Tevin Jones, Recapping Their Preseason Performances

June 1 was the final roster cut date for CFL teams as they prepare for week 1 of the regular season. The Montreal Alouettes released 20 players to finalize their roster ahead of the regular season. Wide receiver Tevin Jones was among the players released. Jones was 14 in receiving yards last season with Saskatchewan.

Released Players: DL Jayson Ademilola, WR Frédérik Antoine, OL Ja’Chai Baker, DL Kivon Bennett, WR Ramaud Chiaokhiao-Bowman, DB Macon Clark, WR Nicholas Gendron, RB Michael Herzog, WR Tyrone Howell, WR Tevin Jones, DB Maxym Lavallée, DL Aaron Lynch, DL Ifeanyi Maijeh, DB Darion McKenzie, LB Smoke Monday, LB Jaylen Moody, DL T.D. Moultry, FB Tanner Nelmes, OL Jazstone Turnetine, WR Jalen Wayne.

DL Jayson Ademilola – Notre Dame

Preseason: 4 tackles, 1 sack, 2 QB hurries, 3 run stops

Ademilola looked good in an Alouettes jersey. There were multiple plays in which the defensive tackle made a positive impact and demonstrated that he could be effective at the pro level. The Notre Dame product made plays both in the pass rush and in run defense.

WR Frédérik Antoine – Laval

Preseason: 2 receptions, 14 yards

Antoine was a 5th-round draft pick for Montreal in the recent CFL Draft. He caught both of his targets in the preseason for 14 yards and drew a pass interference penalty.

OL Ja’Chai Baker – South Alabama

Preseason: Participated in offensive line units

Ja’Chai Baker played pretty well overall in the Alouettes’ first preseason game. With the roster format, he would have needed to be perfect to make the team as an American offensive lineman. While he played well in the preseason there was a play in which he allowed a pressure in the first game as well as another play in which a run stopping defender came by his way.

DL Kivon Bennett – Arkansas State

Preseason: 1 tackle, 1 QB hit

Bennett made a QB hit and 1 tackle on a 5-yard run play. Both plays came in the 2nd half of the 2nd Alouettes game.

WR Ramaud Chiaokhiao-Bowman – Northwestern

Preseason: 6 receptions, 54 yards

Chiaokhiao-Bowman caught all 6 of his targets for 54 yards in the first Alouettes preseason game. In the 2nd he was only targetted once but did not record a reception.

DB Macon Clark – Tulane

Preseason: 5 tackles, 1 pass defended, 1 QB hurry

Clark recorded 5 tackles and a special teams tackle. He also made a QB hurry and assisted with a tackle on a play that resulted in a run stop and assisted on another play that resulted in a stop against the pass.

WR Nicholas Gendron – Ottawa

Preseason: 2 receptions, 18 yards

Gendron was an undrafted Canadian prospect out of Ottawa. He caught 2 of his 4 targets for 18 yards in the 2nd preseason game. He ran a good route that nearly resulted in a touchdown in the game as well but was not able to bring the ball in for a catch.

RB Michael Herzog – Hillsdale

Preseason: 12 carries, 38 yards; 1 kickoff return, 17 yards

Herzog rushed 12 times for 38 yards. He made a good 10-yard run in the 2nd game in which he showed good speed and potential. While he made some good runs for Montreal there was a high frequency in which Ottawa managed to stop the run on Herzog’s rushes.

WR Tyrone Howell – Louisiana Monroe

Preseason: No recorded stats

Tyrone Howell was not targeted in the preseason. He dressed in the 2nd preseason game only in which he was a 2nd string receiver.

WR Tevin Jones – Memphis

Preseason: 2 receptions, 6 yards

Jones caught both of his targets for 6 yards. He did not dress in the 2nd preseason game. His release is surprising given the fact he was signed right at the start of CFL free agency after being 14th in receiving in the league last year. He caught 65 passes for 882 yards and 3 touchdowns last season.

DB Maxym Lavallée – Laval

Preseason: 1 tackle

Lavallée’s recorded 1 tackle in the preseason which came in the 2nd game. He was an 8th-round pick for Montreal in 2023. Last year he played for Laval where he made 20 solo tackles, 10 assisted tackles, and 2 knockdowns over 7 games.

DL Aaron Lynch – South Florida

Lynch did not appear on the stats sheet but he did assist with a run stop in the 2nd preseason game in which he helped hold a run play to 1 yard.

DL Ifeanyi Maijeh – Rutgers

Preseason: 2 tackles, 1 sack, 3 QB hurries

Maijeh made a tackle in both preseason games including a sack in the first game. In the 2nd game, his tackle was a stop against the run and he also assisted with a run stop in the 2nd game.

DB Darion McKenzie – Merrimack

Preseason: 1 tackle, 1 pass defended, 1 fumble recovery

Mckenzie made a tackle in the first game. In the 2nd game, he broke up a pass and recovered a fumble.

LB Smoke Monday – Auburn

Preseason: 3 tackles

Monday had a pass breakup in the first game and made 3 tackles and a special teams tackle in the 2nd game. There was also a run play in the 2nd game in which he made well-timed first contact which helped another defender make the stop.

LB Jaylen Moody – Alabama

Preseason: 4 tackles, 1 pass defended, 1 QB hurry

Moody had a QB hurry and broke up a pass in the first game. In the 2nd game, he made 3 tackles 1 of which was a run stop. He also assisted on a run stop in the 2nd game.

DL T.D. Moultry – Auburn

Preseason: 1 tackle, 2 QB hurries

Moultry’s release is surprising as it seemed he was poised to take on a larger role for Montreal after joining the team late last season. He started in the final game of the regular season before being on the 1-game injured list over the playoffs.

In the second preseason game, he made a tackle which was a run stop and also hurried the quarterback once. In the second game, he had a QB hit and broke up a pass.

FB Tanner Nelmes – Laurier

Nelmes dressed as the third-string fullback in both preseason games.

OL Jazstone Turnetine – Florida State

Turnetine played well overall in the preseason at right tackle. He did allow 2 pressures in the first preseason game. With Jamar McGloster and Nick Callender being essentially locked to start at tackle for Montreal there was little room for error for a prospective American offensive tackle.

WR Jalen Wayne – South Alabama

Preseason: 4 receptions, 26 yards

Wayne was targeted once in the first preseason game but did not record a reception. He caught all 4 of his targets in the 2nd preseason game for 26 yards in the 2nd game.
