Roughriders Sign Former XFL LB Tegray Scales

On Thursday, the Saskatchewan Roughriders announced the signing of American linebacker Tegray Scales, who was previously a member of the XFL’s Dallas Renegades.

Scales originally went undrafted out of Indiana in 2018, but signed with the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams as a free agent. He was released during final roster cuts, and would go on to join the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad. Scales was never elevated to the active roster, and was let go for a second time at the end of the season. After a short stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Scales found himself out of football for the majority of 2019.

In October of 2019, Scales was selected in the ninth round of the XFL draft by the Dallas Renegades. He went on to play five games for Dallas in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, recording 24 tackles and a sack.

In November of 2020, a few months after the XFL suspended operations, Scales got another opportunity with the Steelers. He appeared in 4 games on special teams, recording no meaningful statistics. Scales’ most recent pro experience came in August of this year with the Cleveland Browns, a brief camp appearance that only lasted 6 days.

Scales will look to get his career back on track in Saskatchewan, where he will have a better chance at getting snaps. Other XFL players such as Shawn Oakman (Toronto), Deatrick Nichols (Winnipeg), and James Butler (BC) have all found success in Canada this season.
