Saskatchewan Roughriders Add Two Americans To Training Camp Roster

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed American receiver Dazz Newsome and linebacker Diego Fagot (pronounced: Fuh-go).

The 5-foot-10, 184-pound Newsome was a former sixth-round draft pick (221st overall) by the Chicago Bears in 2021. The pass catcher played in three games for Chicago making two grabs for 23 yards and taking back six punts for 75 yards. He has also spent time with the Seattle Seahawks, Cincinnati Bengals, Kansas City Chiefs, and San Francisco 49ers.

Newsome played four seasons for North Carolina collegiately, tallying 188 receptions, 2,435 yards, and 24 touchdowns. On special teams, he accumulated 679 yards and a touchdown across 44 punts and seven kickoff returns. The 24-year-old was named to the All-ACC second team in 2019, and was an All-ACC honourable mention in 2020.

Fagot went unselected in the 2022 draft before signing with the Baltimore Ravens. He also spent time with the New England Patriots and the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL, not appearing in any regular season games.

During his four years at Navy, the 26-year-old tallied 282 defensive tackles (36 tackles for loss), ten sacks, five pass deflections, six forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and two interceptions including one being returned for a touchdown across 42 games.

Thanks to his production, the linebacker was named to the first team All-AAC team in 2019 and second team in All-AAC team in 2020.
