The Argos continue adding American imports to their secondary this off-season. This time, signing DB Devin Hafford, a rookie pro player who has been on a USFL, XFL, and NFL roster twice in the last year.
Argonauts Newest DB Devin Hafford Joins Fourth Pro Football League
The WAC defensive player of the year at Tarleton State has had a unique pro journey. Devin Hafford signed on as an undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots last Spring, and he was promptly released before latching on with the Pittsburgh Maulers in the United States Football League.
Hafford would get another shot with the Patriots this summer but was let go again before the NFL 2022 season by New England. The Houston Roughnecks would then draft him in the returning XFL draft in November. However, Houston would release Hafford in January in the XFL’s first round of training camp player cuts.
Hafford’s collegiate exploits were enough to garner him interest across four different pro leagues. The 6’1, 210lb DB will have yet another opportunity to stick, this time in Canada with the CFL champion Toronto Argonauts.
The Argos have been very busy adding on American free agents this off-season. Particuarly in their secondary. The additions have taken on that much more importance after All-Star CB Jamal Peters departed for the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons.
Including the re-signing of CFL veteran Robertson Daniel. This is Toronto’s sixth DB signing since the new year.
On top of today’s signing of Hafford, the Double Blue has also added American free agents Keith Washington II, another USFL 2022 player, and Qwan’tez Stiggers, Chris Moore, and JT Hassell to the position.
ARGOS SIGN AMERICAN DB DEVIN HAFFORD
TORONTO – The Toronto Argonauts Football Club announced today the team had signed American DB Devin Hafford.
Hafford, 24, had two stints with the New England Patriots in 2022 after initially being signed by the NFL team in May. The 6’1, 210lb DB spent six seasons at Tarleton State (2016-2021) in Texas, where throughout 56 games, the Texas native compiled 243 tackles, 11.5 for loss, and 12 interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns, one forced fumble and four fumble recoveries. Hafford was the WAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2021 after six interceptions, two fumble recoveries, seven pass breakups, and 50 tackles across 11 games. His eight takeaways were tied for third most across all of NCAA Division I, and his six interceptions ranked tied for fourth in 2021. Hafford joins former teammate QB Ben Holmes on the Argos, who also attended Tarleton State.
