The Toronto Argonauts signed quarterback Bryan Scott following Chad Kelly’s broken tibia in their 30-28 East Division final victory over Montreal.
Kelly sustained the injury late in the third quarter when Alouettes defenders Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund and Geoffrey Cantin Arku made the tackle. TSN’s Dave Naylor reports Kelly faces a 6-9 month recovery timeline, potentially impacting the start of the 2025 season.
Nick Arbuckle completed 5 of 8 passes for 73 yards in relief of Kelly. Head coach Ryan Dinwiddie confirmed Arbuckle will start against Winnipeg in the Grey Cup on Sunday in Vancouver, with Cameron Dukes serving as backup.
Scott (6’2″, 220 lbs) returns to Toronto after dressing for 9 games earlier this season. The Rolling Hills, California native completed 5 passes for 79 yards and 1 touchdown in Week 4 against Montreal before his release following Kelly’s reinstatement.
Kelly finishes 2024 with 2,451 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and 8 interceptions after serving a 9-game suspension to start the season. During Kelly’s absence, Arbuckle threw for 799 yards with 4 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.
Scott previously spent time with Winnipeg, Edmonton, and BC. At Occidental College, he threw for 9,073 yards and 77 touchdowns, earning Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors as a senior. He also spent time in the USFL with the Philadelphia Stars.
The Argonauts face the Blue Bombers in Vancouver on Sunday for the Grey Cup championship.
