The 2026 CFL News Hub Power Rankings – the Aftermath of Week 5
CFL.ca

With Week 5 wrapped up, football fans were treated to some entertaining games. The week began with an offensive explosion by Calgary, with a 58-36 home win vs. Toronto. Ottawa’s visit to Regina fell short with a 27-22 Saskatchewan win. Edmonton’s perfect 3-0 record came to an end with BC playing their best overall game in a 36-24 win. The week would end with a gritty, hard-hitting game in Hamilton with Winnipeg edging out a 14-13 win.

Hello CFL Fans! Here are your CFL News Hub Power Rankings after Week 5.

1 – Montreal Alouettes

Record: 3 – 1

Previous ranking: 4

Montreal was on a bye in Week 5. They will have a very intriguing match on Saturday in Calgary. This will be a great quarterback duo between Vernon Adams Jr and Davis Alexander.

Next game: Saturday, July 11th, 2026 vs Calgary.

2 – Edmonton Elks

Record: 3 – 1

Previous ranking: 1

Edmonton was on the road in beautiful Kelowna, BC, and had a date with the Lions. Looking for another possible win, Edmonton was kept in check by the BC defence. It was not a pretty game for Justin Rankin, as the BC defence made him a non-factor running the ball. The passing game was still productive. At the end of the day, a winless BC came out with their first victory of the season.

Next game: Thursday, July 9th, 2026, vs. Ottawa.

3 – Saskatchewan Roughriders

Record: 3 – 1

Previous ranking: 5

The Riders did a solid job in making the Ottawa running game a non-factor. Both running backs, Greg Bell and Daniel Adeboboye, were held to a total of 60 rushing yards. On the pass defence, they did a great job in containing Jake Maier to 259 passing yards and a lone touchdown pass. Josh Woods and Antoine Brooks Jr were great with 7 tackles each on defence.

Next game: Sunday, July 12th, 2026 vs. Hamilton.

4 – Calgary Stampeders

Record: 2 – 2

Previous ranking: 7

Calgary fans were looking to see when the Stampede would come to town. Technically, it was in progress during the annual Calgary Stampede exhibition and festival. To stay with the theme, the 2nd annual Stampede Bowl coincided with the Calgary Stampede. The football version was orchestrated by Vernon Adams Jr, with an impressive 6-touchdown pass performance.

Next game: Saturday, July 11th, 2026 in Montreal.

5 – Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Record: 2 – 2

Previous ranking: 6

It was supposed to be a great quarterback duo between both Zac Collaros and Bo Levi Michell. Neither quarterback would complete the game. Zac Collaros suffered an upper-body injury early in the 2nd quarter from a Reggie Stubblefield hit, affecting his return to the game. Rookie quarterback Taylor Elgersma would then come into relief. It was a tight game for both sides. Brady Oliveira became the engine running the offence on big plays to close out the game for a Sergio Castillo field goal.

Next game: Friday, July 10th, 2026, vs. Toronto.

6 – Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Record: 2 – 2

Previous ranking: 2

Wherever the Blue Bombers and Tiger-Cats square off, you are in for a good game. Unfortunately for Hamilton’s Bo Levi Michell, he would leave the game in the 3rd quarter with a left ankle injury and not return. It is good to note that he did have successful surgery to his left ankle and is expected to make a full recovery. The Hamilton offence did struggle in Bo Levi’s absence. However, injuries are a part of the game. It will now be up to Tre Ford or Jake Dolegala to carry the torch until Bo Levi Mitchell is fully healthy.

Next game: Sunday, July 12th, 2026, in Saskatchewan.

7 – Toronto Argonauts

Record: 2 – 2

Previous ranking: 3

There were a lot of fans that were predicting a high-scoring game when the Argos played in Calgary. What the fans got was what they wanted. What the Argonauts did not want was a defence that was completely exploited at will by none other than Vernon Adams Jr. Although the offence has been productive this season, the opposite is true on defence. Let's face it, allowing 58 points will not give you any chance to win a football game.

Next game: Friday, July 10th, 2026, in Winnipeg.

8 – BC Lions

Record: 1 – 3

Previous ranking: 8

Sometimes a team needs everything to come together for a win. For BC, the first goal was to shut down an explosive running back in Justin Rankin. More importantly, the BC defence had to be better to avoid points in large volumes. What the Lions did vs. Edmonton was a bit of both. Their game plan worked in their favour, and they walked away with a win. For the first time this season, the Lions defence played their best game.

Next game: BC will be on a bye in Week 6; their next scheduled game will be on Friday, July 17th, 2026.

9 - Ottawa Redblacks

Record: 0 – 4

Previous ranking: 9

Put the record aside, and Ottawa has to begin to change their approach to a football game. It was practically a summary of their respective season to date. Stalled drives, inconsistencies in all phases of the game, and being outmatched physically. The running game has been an issue, as it showed vs. Saskatchewan, holding Justin Hardy to only 45 yards on 9 carries. With a 10-point lead to open the 1st quarter, reality appeared again with an average showing for the remainder of the game.

Next game: Thursday, July 9th, 2026, in Edmonton.
