The Toronto Argonauts got back home to BMO Field and needed every last second to hold off the Calgary Stampeders, riding a defensive stand in the final minutes, two touchdowns from a rookie running back and a signature clutch throw from Chad Kelly to escape with the win. It was messy, it was emotional, and by the sound of the postgame locker room, it was exactly the kind of game this group needed.
Head coach Mike Miller didn't sugarcoat how the night felt from the sideline. "This game isn't over until it's over," Miller said. "We had some momentum and offensively gave it back or, you know, this or that happened. But there was a belief. You could feel it on the sideline and you can definitely feel it in that locker room right now. It's high energy."
The Defense Bails Everyone Out
When Toronto's offense stalled, the defense kept bailing them out — and it capped things off with a stop Miller called the difference in the game. "That stop is the ball game," Miller said. "We've had a few of those this year. And again, those guys just want to line up one more time... We said we want to play smart and fast, but we want to be a physical football team and we take great pride in our ability to hit."
Cornerback Tarvarus McFadden pointed to a season-long emphasis on finishing plays that finally showed up when it mattered — including Vernon Wilridge's first interception of the year. "When the ball going in the air, we just got to attack it, man," McFadden said. "We left a lot of plays over the year, over the season, so we just been emphasizing on coming down when the plays may happen."
McFadden also credited the chess match nature of a rematch against a Calgary team Toronto had already seen once this season. "Obviously they had some nuances to their offenses that they used this time to attack us on the defensive end. And vice versa, we knew some things that they was trying to accomplish and try to just play the chess match with them."
Chad Kelly's Chemistry — and His Mistakes
Chad Kelly threw two touchdowns and made a game-defining connection with Damonte Coxie late, but he was the first to admit the ugly plays were on him too. "Some of the things I got to correct, you know, not trying to launch the ball up," Kelly said. "But we're in the red zone, hats off to them. That corner, LeBros is special. He's a special player."
The Coxie connection late didn't happen by accident, according to Kelly. "That's something that, you know, we obviously work on. If we see something, hey, give him a signal or hey, we call it in the huddle, and he made a play when it mattered most. And that's what it's about. Chemistry."
Kelly leaned into his aggressive reputation when asked to explain how he balances risk with the mistakes that come with it. "If I'm not aggressive, then they might start calling me Checkdown Charlie, right? That's not how I play the game," Kelly said. "There's a time and place. And I think when it matters most, that's when you really got to execute at a higher level."
Miller backed his quarterback's approach, even acknowledging the tough throws that come with it. "There are always going to be throws that wish we had back. But Chad gives us a chance every week and I'm sure glad he's in our group. I love working with him. Passionate, generous teammate, and he puts it all on the line."
Sam Hicks Bounces Back in a Big Way
Rookie running back Samuel Hicks put together the best game of his young career — two touchdowns, including a 40-yard house call — just weeks after a costly fumble. He didn't hide from what got him through it.
"I got to keep my head high. Everybody make mistakes, you know. Football. So that's all I got to say." — Samuel Hicks
Hicks said the message from his coaches after that fumble was simple. "They said keep my head up. Next play, next play. And Coach Kadeem said, 'Now you gotta make up for the rest of the game now.' So I was like, alright, bet. Let's do it."
On the touchdown run itself, Hicks said the read was instant once he hit the second level. "When I got through the line of scrimmage, I seen green and I see nobody by me, I said, okay, it's a race. It's a foot race. And I love foot races." He even had a celebration ready to go, inspired by his favorite anime character. "I love martial arts, so that's it."
Miller was quick to praise the rookie's response after a rough stretch. "He's coming on, a rookie, has had a pretty good first half here. He had the unfortunate fumble, but he responded tonight. He owned it and he went out and applied the technique that we needed. I'm really proud of him."
The Home Crowd, and a Milestone Return Man
Everyone in the building noticed the energy at BMO Field after Toronto had been away from home. McFadden didn't hold back. "BMO was rocking tonight. I really liked it, I ain't gonna lie," he said, pointing to the closeness built during training camp. "We've been grinding and grinding and grinding. When we play the game that we know we can play, we gonna come out victorious."
Kelly agreed, saying it was good to be back in a familiar building. "It's always great to be home, to find that soft spot, that medium where you're like, oh, I feel comfortable." He also gave a shoutout to special teams for stepping up, particularly kick and punt returner Generian Grant. "That guy is special. He's going to go down as one of the best, if not the best."
Miller confirmed the milestone. "I believe he became second all-time tonight, so that kind of speaks for itself. Every time he gets his hands on the ball, he's dangerous and he has potential to break a game wide open like he did tonight." Miller also praised the defensive front that set the tone up front. "Maxie does a great job with those guys. They come to play, they're hungry, they're physical, and they're relentless."
Toronto walks away from this one battered but believing, and with a rookie running back and a milestone return man giving Miller even more to work with as the season rolls on. If the defense keeps producing stops like the one that sealed this game, the Argos are going to be tough to shake in the East.
