The Lions fell behind by 11 in the first half against Ottawa and looked nothing like a team riding a winning streak. By the time the clock hit zero, BC had turned it into a fifth straight win, with Zander Horvath tying a club record with four rushing touchdowns and Nathan Rourke shaking off a rough first 30 minutes to steady the ship. It wasn't clean. Nobody in the locker room pretended it was. But BC keeps finding ways to get it done, and that's starting to become the story of their season.
A Slow Start Nathan Rourke Owns Completely
Rourke didn't dodge responsibility for BC's shaky first half. The Lions trailed by 11 points at the break, and the quarterback made clear where the blame belonged.
"What happened in the first half is on me. I made some mistakes, made some bad decisions," Rourke said. "I'm so grateful for the other phases and other people on offense picking me up."
Whatever went wrong before halftime, it didn't carry into the second. Rourke pointed to a cleaner approach and fewer giveaways as the difference-maker down the stretch.
"I think we just played cleaner football in the second half. We didn't give them many opportunities," Rourke said. "I think good teams find ways to win ugly games, and this certainly wasn't a pretty one, but a win is a win."
Head coach Buck Pierce backed that read of his quarterback without hesitation, calling Rourke's ability to reset after mistakes as good as anyone he's coached.
"Interceptions are going to happen. He's going to look at it and communicate what he's seeing, and we're going to go from there. That's what he does as good as anybody I've been around," Pierce said.
Horvath Ties the Club Record and Doesn't Want the Credit
Horvath's four rushing touchdowns matched a club record previously held by his own backfield partner, James Butler. When it came up in his post-game media session, Horvath brushed past the individual angle almost immediately.
"It's a good team win. It's never an individual win, and everyone went out there, executed their assignment, and did their 1/12," Horvath said. "It's cool to have two backs playing together, both on the field all the time too, having that stat for our career scoreboard."
Pierce sees the Horvath-Butler tandem as one of the engines behind BC's offensive identity right now, crediting more than just the backs themselves.
"Him and James Butler make each other better. We're able to mix it up a little bit to keep those guys fresh. You gotta credit the O-line too and the receivers," Pierce said. "He runs with power and has speed to the second level. We trust him in the pass game as well."
Rourke echoed the same sentiment, framing Horvath's physical style as a direct extension of how this team wants to play football, especially when a game turns into a grind.
"He's certainly fit our identity as a team of being really gritty and being able to give him the rock in situations to kind of run the clock out," Rourke said. "He's done a fantastic job with that, running behind the guys up front who've been paving the way for him, him and JB."
What Turned the Game Around
Down 11 and dealing with turnovers, BC needed something to change at halftime, and all three voices in the locker room landed on the same explanation: stop overreacting and go back to what works. Horvath put it simply.
"I think it's really just sticking to what we do best. Even though stuff wasn't going as we wanted at the beginning of the game, we just stuck to it and weren't doing anything crazy second half," Horvath said. "It's just everyone going out there doing their job and executing their assignment."
Pierce saw the win as a product of BC getting contributions across the board rather than one unit bailing out another.
"Winning is hard, and it's never going to be as clean or what you envision it each week. But when we had to, we made some plays in all three phases," Pierce said. "Special teams got us some field position. Defense, doing what they do, getting pressure on the quarterback and taking the ball away. And offense put some critical drives together when we needed to."
No Time to Enjoy It — Montreal's Up Next
BC doesn't get much time to sit with this one. A short week sends the Lions straight into a Friday date with a Montreal team that Rourke didn't hesitate to praise.
"We gotta switch our minds real quick and move on to a really, like you said, a very good team. Playing very good ball right now, going into their place, which is a really fun environment always," Rourke said.
Pierce isn't worried about the short turnaround messing with his team's rhythm — BC has lived with that kind of scheduling all year.
"We've been doing this all year. If you look at our schedule, it's nothing new to us. Our guys are excited to spend some time together and excited about the challenge of preparing for a very good Montreal team in a couple days," Pierce said.
Horvath knows the celebration window is small, and he's not fighting that reality.
"You can go out and celebrate tonight, but you got to lock in really quick and have a great week of practice," Horvath said.
The Bigger Picture
Five straight wins and a first-half deficit erased says plenty about where this BC team is right now. Horvath isn't ready to look past any single opponent, no matter the streak.
"You can't really look to the future like that. It's always a one-game season, no matter who you're playing," Horvath said. "If we go out there and execute to the best of our ability, we're gonna win anything we go and play against."
Rourke, meanwhile, is keeping his focus on the standings. With the West Division race tightening by the week, every result matters.
"We need every chance that we can get with the way the West is shaping out, and we'll take this one for sure," Rourke said.
BC now turns the page fast, chasing win number six against an Alouettes team playing some of its best football of the season. If Friday goes anything like Saturday did, the Lions will have to survive adversity before they can celebrate again.
