The BC Lions signed American running back Shaun Shivers on Tuesday. They have also released Antonio Williams.
Shaun Shivers
Shaun Shivers played 4 seasons at Auburn before transferring to Indiana for his final year. In his senior year at Indiana, he started in all 12 games. In 2022 he had 143 carries for 592 yards (4.1 yards per carry) and 6 touchdowns. He also added 128 receiving yards on 22 catches and a touchdown.
He played in 41 games over 4 seasons at Auburn, 10 of which he started. He had 201 carries for Auburn for 1,020 yards in that time (4.7 yards per carry) and 8 touchdowns. He also had 38 receptions for 211 yards and a touchdown.
Shivers was signed by the Seattle Seahawks in May as an undrafted free agent and attended their rookie camp.
Shivers measure 5’7, 185 lbs. He is known as a running back with good speed and escapability who is dangerous in the open field. Shivers is also considered to have good hands and route-running ability. Due to his size, there will be a concern with his ability to pass protect.
Antonio Williams
Antonio Williams was released on Tuesday by the Lions. He was signed by the team in February but did not appear in a regular season game. In the preseason he had the 2nd most rushing yards among running backs as he rushed 17 times for 69 yards (4.1 yards per carry). The 4.1 yards per carry was not impressive compared to other backs although it was more than Taquan Mizzell’s average in the preseason which was 3.5. Mizzell was named the starter for BC and has been excellent and is currently second in the CFL in rushing yards.
Prior to BC, Williams spent time in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills and New York Giants on the practice squad from 2020 to 2022. He did appear in 3 NFL games and rushed 12 times for 63 yards (5.25 yards per carry), and had 1 reception for 20 yards.
Williams played for Ohio State in 2016 and 2017 before playing his last 2 seasons for North Carolina.
