The past two days have been encouraging for Calgary Stampeder fans as they saw their quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell return to the field.
After being placed on the six-game injured list in week three, Mitchell was removed from the list on Tuesday. He had suffered a broken fibula that developed during the first two games of the regular season. The team decided to put him on the injured list and started rookie quarterback Jake Maier the last two games.
Mitchell made his return to the practice field Thursday for the team’s first practice prior to their Labor Day game Monday against Edmonton. He was in full gear and took some reps with the first team, but it is still unknown whether he will start Monday. Calgary Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson is taking his time with Mitchell in practice before making a decision.
“He did actually do some good things today. I’m going to try to be smart but I think when he tells me he’s good-to-go, he’s going to play and I’m looking forward to that day. It’s coming soon. Just play it out this week and make the decision closer to Day 3.”

Mitchell got off to a slow start to the season which was in part because he was working through his injury. In his first two starts this season, he threw for 542 yards with one touchdown and five interceptions. He was then placed on the six-game injured list where Maier took over for the injured veteran quarterback.
After a rough first quarter to his first career start, Maier was surprised many and impressed with his performances through two games. The rookie quarterback has thrown for 611 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. This includes leading his team to an impressive week three win over Montreal and a near-upset of Winnipeg last weekend.
Maier’s performance has caught the attention of many including Mitchell.
“He’s been balling the hell out. It’s been fun to watch. I would love to be out there as soon as I possibly can, whether that’s this game, next game or the game after that. I’ll do whatever is best for the team.”

While the status of Mitchell is still unknown, it has become clear to many that since Mitchell is no longer in a boot that he should make a return soon. Maier’s performance makes it easier for Calgary to go to the rookie should Mitchell have any setbacks prior to Monday’s game.
The Stampeders are looking to bounce back from their 1-3 start on Monday as they take on the Edmonton Elks. One of the biggest questions heading into that matchup is who is going to be taking snaps under center for Calgary.
